Patrick: The Silent, Smart Kitchen Recycling Bin

Weiwen Xiong’s innovative design redefines waste sorting for modern homes.

Patrick, a kitchen recycling bin designed by Weiwen Xiong, addresses the everyday challenges of waste disposal with a focus on efficiency, sustainability, and user comfort.

In contemporary home environments, waste management often presents a series of inconveniences, from noisy lids to complicated sorting and difficult cleaning. Patrick, created by Weiwen Xiong alongside Qiuping Liao and Juan Wang, offers a thoughtful solution by integrating three independent compartments for precise garbage classification. This design not only streamlines the recycling process but also encourages environmentally responsible habits, aligning with the growing global emphasis on sustainability.

One of Patrick’s standout features is its silent opening and closing mechanism. Utilizing advanced slow-down technology, the lid operates almost noiselessly, enhancing the tranquility of the kitchen space. The unique lid design ensures smooth rotation without striking adjacent walls, a common issue in compact urban homes. Such attention to detail reflects a deep understanding of both user experience and spatial constraints.

The materials chosen for Patrick further reinforce its eco-friendly ethos. The main shell is crafted from stainless steel, while the top cover, back shell, and base use degradable plastics. This combination not only ensures durability but also simplifies cleaning, thanks to the smooth, corner-free surfaces. The bin’s dimensions—605mm wide, 427mm deep, and 388mm high—make it suitable for a variety of kitchen layouts.

Operation is intuitive: a gentle pedal opens the lid automatically, allowing hands-free disposal and minimizing contact with waste. After use, the lid closes slowly and quietly, preventing the spread of odors and reducing the risk of hand contamination. This user-centric approach addresses common pain points, making daily waste disposal more hygienic and pleasant.

Patrick’s design journey began in Shenzhen in October 2023 and concluded in June 2024, driven by research into sustainable living and the need for practical, attractive solutions in homeware. The project overcame significant challenges in merging multiple functionalities—classified sorting, easy cleaning, silent operation, and wall protection—into a single, cohesive product. The result is a recycling bin that blends technical ingenuity with aesthetic appeal, earning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025 for its contribution to quality of life and environmental stewardship.

Patrick exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday objects, transforming routine tasks into seamless, sustainable experiences for modern households.
