Located in Kai Tak, Hong Kong, the Bamboo residence by Mani and K Interior Design stands as a testament to the power of human-centric design. Drawing inspiration from natural landscapes—such as bamboo forests, Siberian cranes, and rustic woodlands—the project creates a calming, timeless atmosphere. The use of green-label certified, low-formaldehyde materials underscores a commitment to eco-friendliness and healthy living environments, reflecting a growing trend in sustainable urban design.
The 108-square-meter home is meticulously organized to maximize comfort and functionality. It features a master suite, guest room, living and dining areas, a Japanese tea room, two bathrooms, a multifunctional laundry room, and a kitchen. Large windows and transparent glass elements invite abundant natural light, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This design strategy not only enhances spatial perception but also fosters a restorative ambiance, as sunlight and green views permeate the interiors.
One of the project’s most distinctive features is its innovative use of curved lines throughout the ceiling, particularly in the living room. These curves, crafted from natural solid wood veneer, cleverly conceal air conditioning maintenance apertures while enriching the spatial dynamics. The interplay of soft-toned wood and stone patterns further elevates the sense of tranquility, with each material chosen for its ability to evoke warmth and relaxation.
Mani and K Interior Design faced significant challenges in maximizing spaciousness within the compact apartment. A prominent beam spanning the social area threatened to create a sense of oppression. This obstacle was overcome by wrapping the beam in a graceful curve, softening its presence and visually expanding the space. The design team’s research into linear and curved elements allowed for a harmonious blend of simplicity and sophistication, ensuring that each area feels cohesive and inviting.
The Bamboo project exemplifies the integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Skilled carpentry was essential for realizing the intricate curved surfaces, while contemporary lighting solutions and thoughtfully selected materials contribute to the residence’s overall health and comfort. The result is a living environment that not only meets professional and industrial standards but also provides a sense of healing and fulfillment—a quality recognized by its Iron A' Design Award in 2025.
By prioritizing natural aesthetics, sustainable materials, and innovative spatial solutions, Mani and K Interior Design’s Bamboo residence offers a blueprint for future urban homes that seek to balance serenity with functionality. As cities continue to grow, such designs highlight the importance of creating personal sanctuaries that nurture both body and mind.
