FurBallRetreat: Foldable Cat Bag Redefines Pet Travel

Recognizing this, Yu Ren’s team developed FurBallRetreat, a foldable cat bag that transforms the way cats and their owners experience the outdoors. The design responds directly to the needs of families seeking portable, space-saving solutions for pet care, both at home and on the go.

FurBallRetreat distinguishes itself through its unique book-like appearance and its use of malleable organ paper, allowing the bag to unfold into a cozy, secure space for cats. This innovative structure not only ensures comfort and safety but also introduces an element of playful design to any setting. The product’s versatility is further enhanced by its ability to contract to the thickness of a book, making storage effortless when not in use.

Sustainability stands at the core of FurBallRetreat’s construction. Crafted from environmentally responsible materials such as DuPont paper and recycled board, the cat bag reflects a commitment to eco-friendly practices. The detachable nature of DuPont paper enables flexible contraction, while replaceable wearing parts simplify cleaning and maintenance, ensuring a hygienic environment for pets.

Research conducted by the design team revealed that 83% of surveyed cat owners regularly use a cat bag when venturing outdoors, yet many struggle with storage and portability. FurBallRetreat directly addresses these concerns, offering a lightweight, compact solution that integrates seamlessly into both domestic and outdoor environments. The design’s adaptability was achieved through extensive study of cat households and living spaces across various countries.

The project, initiated and completed in Shenzhen between March and June 2024, overcame significant challenges in balancing home and outdoor usability while prioritizing environmental considerations. The result is a product that not only solves practical issues but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of living spaces with its charming, book-inspired form.

FurBallRetreat’s excellence has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, a testament to its remarkable innovation, technical prowess, and positive impact on the pet care industry. As lifestyles continue to evolve, this foldable cat bag sets a new standard for portable pet comfort and sustainable design.
