Tribute to Magnolia Flowers: Shanghai’s Timeless Reception Space

Blending Old Shanghai Charm with Modern Design Innovation

Xingbin Yang’s award-winning reception design pays homage to Shanghai’s cultural heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics.

Located at the vibrant intersection of Qingxi Road and Jianshe Road in Changning District, Shanghai, the “Tribute to Magnolia Flowers” project by Xingbin Yang stands as a celebration of the city’s layered history and dynamic future. Conceived in late 2023 and completed by June 2024, this reception space draws inspiration from the ideals and memories of old Shanghai, weaving together elements such as magnolia flowers, traditional soup flowers, and vintage currency motifs. These references serve as both a tribute to the city’s past and a canvas for envisioning its future, reflecting the evolving life attitudes and values of Shanghai’s citizens across generations.

The design distinguishes itself through its striking use of materials and color. A dominant dark black palette, reminiscent of “old money” retro style, is complemented by luxurious finishes including Atlantic snow white, Brazil black, translucent marble, rosin jade, and rich dark wood. This sophisticated material selection creates a powerful visual impact, ensuring the space leaves a memorable impression on visitors. The interplay of these textures and tones not only evokes nostalgia but also communicates a sense of enduring elegance and innovation.

Functionality is at the heart of the project’s versatility. While the space serves as a real estate reception area, its adaptable design allows for seamless transformation into a bar, restaurant, or cultural tourism venue. This flexibility supports sustainable development by extending the lifespan and utility of the interior, aligning with contemporary trends in adaptive reuse and multifunctional environments.

Chinese cultural motifs are intricately incorporated through design techniques such as niche shaping and deconstructivism. These methods break traditional boundaries, offering a fresh interpretation of classic elements within a modern context. The result is a three-dimensional, immersive environment that tells the story of Shanghai’s past while inviting new narratives to unfold.

Recognition of the project’s excellence came with the Silver A’ Design Award in Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design for 2025. This accolade highlights the design’s outstanding technical prowess, artistic skill, and its ability to inspire awe and admiration. The “Tribute to Magnolia Flowers” stands as a testament to the enduring power of thoughtful design to bridge eras and cultures, offering a unique experience that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.

By seamlessly blending heritage with innovation, Xingbin Yang’s creation not only preserves the spirit of old Shanghai but also sets a new benchmark for reception spaces in the city’s ever-evolving landscape.
