The Light Operator stands out in the field of biomedical research equipment by integrating high-resolution imaging and real-time algorithms to achieve exceptional accuracy in cell identification and sorting. Unlike traditional manual methods, this device leverages optoelectronic dielectrophoresis, a cutting-edge technology that enables researchers to select and culture cells with unprecedented precision and speed. This innovation not only streamlines laboratory workflows but also minimizes the risk of cell damage, a critical factor in sensitive biological experiments.
Beihang University’s design team has prioritized both functionality and aesthetics in the Light Operator. The device features a distinctive silver-gray PB material surface, achieved through a meticulous electroplating process, and a translucent, flip-top cover that allows users to observe the sorting process in real time. The exterior, crafted with CNC machining and seamless connections, reflects a modern, high-tech aesthetic, making it a visually appealing addition to any laboratory environment.
User interaction with the Light Operator is intuitive and transparent. The process begins with a system self-check, followed by user login and configuration of sorting parameters tailored to specific experimental needs. The device’s transparent cover enables continuous monitoring, while automated data recording and notifications ensure a seamless workflow. Upon completion, researchers can easily retrieve results, export data, and perform routine maintenance, all while maintaining full visibility of the device’s operational status.
The development of the Light Operator was informed by extensive user research, including behavioral analysis through video recordings and interviews. This user-centered approach led to ergonomic enhancements and parameter adjustments, resulting in a device that not only meets technical demands but also delivers a satisfying experimental experience. The project’s research findings have been recognized in international conferences and journals, underscoring its impact on both usability and scientific innovation.
Overcoming challenges such as integrating multidisciplinary expertise and balancing innovation with practicality, Beihang University’s team has created a product that addresses real-world laboratory needs while pushing the boundaries of design and technology. The Light Operator’s recognition with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 attests to its excellence in both technical performance and artistic achievement.
The Light Operator exemplifies how thoughtful design and advanced technology can revolutionize scientific research, setting a new standard for precision, usability, and aesthetic appeal in laboratory equipment.
