Yokohama Aoba: Reimagining Urban Living with Nature

Innovative Japanese home design restores harmony between architecture and environment.

Yokohama Aoba, designed by Shin Takamatsu and Kei Tamai, challenges conventional urban housing by reconnecting residents with the natural world, blending modern innovation with traditional Japanese values.

In the rapidly expanding suburbs of Japan’s major cities, urban housing often sacrifices nature for privacy and efficiency. Shin Takamatsu and Kei Tamai’s Yokohama Aoba project seeks to reverse this trend by drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese homes, which historically embraced the climate and environment. The design aims to restore the lost connection between people and nature, offering a refreshing alternative to the inward-focused, energy-dependent homes that dominate today’s urban landscape.

At the heart of Yokohama Aoba lies a pentagonal plot with a central courtyard, a feature reminiscent of Kyoto’s machiya townhouses. This courtyard acts as the core of the home, linking every room and creating a constant visual and spatial connection to the sky. The innovative “double Möbius strip” circulation, formed by a looping staircase and hallway, allows for flexible movement throughout the house. This unique layout supports a variety of family activities and adapts to changing needs, fostering both togetherness and individual privacy.

Technically, the home is carefully engineered to maximize natural light and airflow. Most rooms face the courtyard, ensuring that daylight and fresh air reach every corner. The wings of the house are angled at 40 degrees, enhancing the sense of openness and space. Each room has its own dedicated path, a feature that proved especially valuable during the pandemic by allowing residents to avoid unnecessary contact. The design minimizes energy dependence, making urban living more comfortable and sustainable.

The realization of Yokohama Aoba required overcoming significant challenges. In a market dominated by small-scale, mass-produced developments, maintaining quality and architectural integrity is rare. By collaborating with renowned architects and resisting the pressure to downscale, the project delivers exceptional value for high-end properties. The design process, which began in 2014 and culminated in a series of award-winning homes by 2017, demonstrates a commitment to excellence and innovation.

Yokohama Aoba’s approach is rooted in research on traditional Japanese architecture, which prioritized harmony with nature even in densely populated cities. By reviving these principles, the project offers a blueprint for sustainable, human-centered urban living. The home’s adaptability, energy efficiency, and seamless integration with the environment set a new standard for contemporary housing in Japan and beyond.

Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Yokohama Aoba stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design. By blending artistry, technical skill, and a deep respect for tradition, Shin Takamatsu and Kei Tamai have created a living space that inspires wonder and redefines the possibilities of urban architecture.
