Anthropology Chinese Textbook: A Fusion of Cultures

Minimalist cover design bridges East-West evolution and identity

Xu Tang’s cover for the 13th edition of the Anthropology Chinese Textbook reimagines academic graphics, blending symbolism and simplicity to reflect humanity’s journey and the convergence of global cultures.

The Anthropology Chinese Textbook, a cornerstone in American university curricula, now enters its 13th edition with a striking new cover by Xu Tang. This design moves beyond traditional textbook aesthetics, introducing a visual language that captures both the scientific rigor and the cultural depth of anthropology. The cover’s inspiration stems from a photograph of an ape’s leg, which is artistically combined with the leg of a modern human. This fusion forms a walking figure, symbolizing the evolutionary transition and the ongoing journey of human self-awareness.

Central to the design is the interplay between the letter “A”—the first letter of “Anthropology” in English—and the Chinese character for “human.” This duality not only reflects the textbook’s academic authority but also highlights the intersection of Western scientific traditions and Eastern philosophical roots. The minimalist approach ensures the cover is instantly recognizable, enhancing visual memory while maintaining the professionalism expected of a leading academic publication.

Xu Tang’s use of specialty paper with a laminate finish and gold foil stamping for the ape’s leg adds tactile and visual interest. The gold foil serves as a metaphor for humanity’s “golden past and future,” while the textured paper offers durability and a premium feel. This attention to materiality elevates the book’s presence, making it both a functional and collectible object.

The design process was shaped by extensive research into previous textbook editions, which often relied on static photographic covers. By introducing a dynamic, meaningful graphic, the cover aims to make learning more engaging and accessible, avoiding the monotony of traditional academic visuals. The result is a cover that is simple enough to be understood at a glance, yet rich in symbolism and meaning.

This innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. The Anthropology Chinese Textbook cover was awarded Silver in the prestigious A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2025, recognizing its outstanding creativity, technical excellence, and ability to evoke wonder. Xu Tang’s design stands as a testament to the power of visual storytelling in education, inviting readers to reflect on humanity’s shared journey across cultures and time.

By merging minimalist aesthetics with profound symbolism, the Anthropology Chinese Textbook cover sets a new standard for academic publishing, offering both visual impact and intellectual depth for students and educators alike.
