Xu Tang Reimagines China’s Four Great Novels in Artful Bookcase

Innovative publication design bridges tradition and modernity in literature

Xu Tang’s award-winning reinterpretation of the Four Great Chinese Novels offers readers a visually captivating and culturally rich experience, blending historical reverence with contemporary design sensibilities.

The Four Great Chinese Novels—Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, and Water Margin—have long stood as pillars of Chinese literature. Xu Tang’s latest publication design pays homage to these classics through a set of four books, each housed in a split double bookcase. The design draws inspiration from iconic scenes: a red lion-headed door for Dream of the Red Chamber, flying arrows for Romance of the Three Kingdoms, cloud motifs for Journey to the West, and rebellious flags for Water Margin. This approach not only celebrates the novels’ narrative depth but also transforms the act of reading into an immersive journey.

What distinguishes this edition is its break from traditional presentation. Xu Tang introduces a critic’s perspective, incorporating scholarly commentary alongside the original texts. This dual approach enriches the reading experience, offering historical context and critical insights that invite deeper exploration. The split bookcase, with its one-centimeter gap, serves as a metaphorical doorway—enticing readers to uncover the mysteries within, much like peering through a slightly opened door into another world.

Production techniques further elevate the collection. Specialty paper and Pantone spot color printing ensure vivid visuals, while partial hot stamping adds tactile elegance. The hardcover packaging, mounted on grey board, provides durability and a sense of luxury. Each book measures 262x185x65 mm, balancing substantial presence with ease of handling, making the set both a collector’s item and a practical reading companion.

Research for this project was extensive. Xu Tang examined hundreds of editions spanning from the Qing Dynasty to the present, seeking a balance between simplicity and depth. The resulting design merges traditional motifs with modern minimalism, appealing to both seasoned readers and newcomers. The inclusion of critiques from renowned scholars not only enhances the literary value but also positions the set as a valuable resource for cultural study.

This edition’s interactive qualities are particularly noteworthy. The opening of each bookcase mimics the rising curtain of a stage, gradually revealing the narrative and drawing readers into the unfolding drama. Such thoughtful design choices have garnered international acclaim, earning the project a Silver A’ Design Award in 2025 for its exceptional creativity and technical mastery.

Xu Tang’s Four Great Chinese Novels collection stands as a testament to the enduring power of literature and the transformative potential of design. By bridging past and present, the project invites readers to rediscover these timeless stories through a fresh, innovative lens.
