Aperitio: Harmonious Living by the Sea of Japan

Tomohiro Araki’s villa blends architecture with nature’s rhythms

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sea of Japan, Aperitio by Tomohiro Araki redefines residential harmony, merging Japanese design philosophy with the tranquil beauty of its coastal landscape.

Located in the northern part of Tottori Prefecture, Aperitio stands as a testament to the Japanese principle of living in balance with nature. Designed as a one-story wooden house, the villa’s low eaves and understated exterior allow it to blend seamlessly into the Quasi-National Park Geopark that surrounds it. This approach reflects a deep respect for the environment, a hallmark of Japanese architecture, where the relationship between people, objects, and space forms a unified landscape.

The design emphasizes a strong connection to the outdoors, even while indoors. Expansive openings on the south side invite natural light and fresh air, transforming the living space into an extension of the outside environment. The room’s orientation offers sweeping views of the changing seasons, allowing residents to experience the subtle shifts in light, wind, and sound throughout the year. This seamless integration of interior and exterior spaces fosters a sense of freedom and relaxation, providing a retreat from daily life.

Material choices further support Aperitio’s harmonious ethos. The north-facing façade, exposed to coastal winds, is clad in galvalume steel sheet—mirroring the roof for both durability and aesthetic unity. The entrance, recessed on the west side, minimizes wind exposure, while the deep eaves and high side lights on the north side ensure the house remains comfortable and energy-efficient. These thoughtful details demonstrate a commitment to both function and form, prioritizing comfort without sacrificing visual simplicity.

Rainy days reveal another layer of the villa’s character. The carefully designed roof gutter on the south side creates a delicate water curtain, producing a soothing soundscape that celebrates the beauty of rainfall. This feature, inspired by the regularity of the roofing material, transforms inclement weather into a sensory experience, deepening the connection between residents and their environment.

Aperitio’s out-living room, separated from the entrance approach by glass, balances openness with security. The design avoids overt symbolism, instead opting for a timeless simplicity that resists visual fatigue. According to Tomohiro Araki, this restraint ensures the building remains a subtle yet integral part of its natural context, embodying the uniquely Japanese appreciation for coexistence with nature.

Recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Aperitio exemplifies how architecture can enhance quality of life by fostering harmony between humans and their surroundings. The project stands as a model for sustainable, thoughtful design—one that inspires a renewed appreciation for the everyday beauty of the natural world.
