Inspired by the sensory allure of Japanese robatayaki, Takumi departs from classic motifs to deliver a unique, immersive environment. Rather than restoring traditional elements, the design team embraced a bold, theatrical approach. Curved forms and soaring ceilings create a sense of grandeur, while semi-open dining areas offer both privacy and visual intrigue. The robatayaki bar sits at the heart of the restaurant, with layered seating reminiscent of a stage, ensuring every guest enjoys a front-row view of the culinary artistry unfolding before them.
Differentiating itself from conventional Japanese restaurants, Takumi employs interwoven arcs and glass brick walls to evoke a sense of movement and illusion. The space is crafted to feel like a grand performance venue, where each seating zone presents a distinct scene. The designers chose a palette dominated by orange-red tones, symbolizing the warmth and vibrancy of fire, balanced by cool gray accents. This color scheme, complemented by materials such as metal mesh, mosaic tiles, and terrazzo flooring, enhances both the openness and the modern aesthetic of the venue.
Spanning 264.4 square meters, Takumi’s layout includes a chef’s counter, VIP booths, open seating, and a welcoming waiting area. The entrance features a flaming washi paper artwork, immediately connecting guests to the essence of robatayaki grilling. Every seat is strategically positioned to provide clear views of the chef’s counter, reinforcing the theatrical concept and ensuring a dynamic dining experience for all patrons.
The restaurant’s renovation has not only elevated its visual identity but also its market position. Following its reopening, Takumi observed a significant increase in per-customer spending, reflecting its successful appeal to an upscale clientele. The fusion of specialty cuisine and innovative interior design has solidified Takumi’s standing in Shanghai’s competitive culinary landscape, attracting a loyal and discerning customer base.
Despite challenges related to material sourcing and construction standards in Shanghai, the design team adapted with creative solutions, maintaining both aesthetic integrity and functional excellence. The result is a restaurant that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, offering a sensory and visual feast that celebrates the art of Japanese grilling in a contemporary context.
Takumi’s innovative design has earned it the Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design for 2025, recognizing its outstanding creativity, technical expertise, and ability to inspire amazement and wonder.
