Peach Blossom: A Gallery-Inspired Retirement Residence

Wan-Ting Hung crafts a home where art and daily life intertwine

Blending traditional Chinese artistry with modern innovation, Peach Blossom by Wan-Ting Hung transforms retirement living into an immersive gallery experience.

Peach Blossom, designed by Wan-Ting Hung, reimagines the concept of a retirement residence by merging art, architecture, and lifestyle. Drawing inspiration from the idyllic tale "The Peach Blossom Spring" and the delicate peony paintings of Yun Shouping, the residence becomes a living gallery where each space tells a story. The design caters to a homeowner with a discerning eye for materials and texture, resulting in a home that is both a sanctuary and a showcase of creative expression.

Central to the design is the idea of journey and discovery. Each area within the 109-square-meter home is envisioned as a boat drifting along a river, revealing new vistas at every turn. The living room features a striking mountain-shaped ceiling and a meticulously crafted peony installation composed of over seventy panels and four different materials, assembled in thirteen layers. This centerpiece not only evokes the beauty of traditional Chinese art but also serves as a modern heirloom, infusing the space with cultural depth and personal significance.

The material palette is both diverse and harmonious, incorporating special paints, mirrors, granite, cypress wood, engineered hardwood, and imported thin tiles. Modern touches such as titanium gold accents provide a refined contrast to the natural textures. In the dining area, thin tiles and gold-leaf sconces create a visual reminiscent of a sun against a night sky, complemented by an Earth painting that enhances the room's serene ambiance. Bathrooms continue the theme of luxury and artistry, featuring black-and-white contrasts and gold accents for a sophisticated finish.

Functionality is seamlessly integrated into the artistic vision. The expanded kitchen offers enhanced convenience for daily living, while a dedicated gentleman’s room at the entrance provides a private retreat for leisure activities such as enjoying cigars. Louvered panels replace traditional curtains, and a carefully planned screen divides social and private spaces, ensuring both openness and privacy. The wine cellar, with its combination of rugged stone and titanium gold, exemplifies the residence’s balance between raw nature and refined elegance.

Peach Blossom stands as a testament to the power of design to elevate everyday living. Every corner of the home is thoughtfully curated to encourage pause and appreciation, reflecting the resident’s journey and love for art. The project, completed in Taiwan in 2021, has garnered recognition, winning the Bronze A' Design Award for its innovative approach and contribution to quality of life. Wan-Ting Hung’s creation not only meets the practical needs of retirement but also transforms the home into an ever-evolving canvas, where life and art coexist in perfect harmony.

This residence exemplifies how thoughtful design can create meaningful spaces that enrich daily experiences, offering inspiration for those seeking to blend artistry and comfort in modern living.
