Located in the heart of Ximending, Lai Hao stands as a testament to Taiwan’s creative spirit. The shop’s design draws inspiration from the district’s energetic atmosphere, aiming to showcase the ingenuity of local designers while offering travelers an authentic taste of Taiwanese culture. Wan-Ting Hung’s vision was to harmonize retro elements with contemporary style, resulting in a space that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.

One of Lai Hao’s most distinctive features is its striking use of neon art. Tubing outlines iconic landmarks such as Ximen and Taipei 101, symbolizing the vibrancy of Taiwanese urban life. The shop sign mirrors the colors of the Gaji bag, a nod to the brand’s identity, while vintage lightboxes paired with neon lighting evoke a playful yet sophisticated ambiance. Wooden accents and rattan tones recall the warmth of traditional grocery stores, and terrazzo flooring adds dynamic texture beneath visitors’ feet.

The store’s layout is designed for flexibility and engagement. Spanning 66.1 square meters, the space incorporates movable islands and adjustable pegboards, allowing for creative product displays that adapt to changing needs. The circulation path forms a loop, encouraging exploration and increasing the likelihood of discovery and purchase. This thoughtful arrangement, combined with a soft, natural color palette, creates a welcoming environment that invites visitors to linger.

Material choices reflect a commitment to sustainability and comfort. Faux terrazzo plastic flooring, wood veneer, modular cabinets, and curved glass are paired with eco-friendly building materials. The lighting plan is carefully calibrated, with lightboxes adjusted to blend seamlessly with natural light, ensuring a gentle and inviting visual experience. High ceilings and strategic use of space further enhance the shop’s open, airy feel.

Lai Hao’s transformation from a 50-year-old store into a contemporary retail destination was not without challenges. The renovation addressed structural issues such as leaks, outdated electrical systems, and complex plumbing within a tight timeframe. Additionally, the diverse colors of the products required meticulous planning to achieve visual harmony.
