Eclipse: A Solar-Inspired Transformation of Home Living

AN.J Studio reimagines a vintage residence with light, flow, and innovation.

Inspired by the celestial drama of a solar eclipse, AN.J Studio’s “Eclipse” project transforms a 20-year-old, two-story house in Taiwan into a modern sanctuary where light and dark harmoniously coexist, blending aesthetic sophistication with practical living.

The design concept draws from the rare beauty of a total solar eclipse, using dark wood veneer as the primary palette. Linear and ambient lighting evoke the ethereal glow of the sun’s corona, casting a subtle halo that animates the interiors. This interplay of light and shadow not only creates visual intrigue but also symbolizes the emergence of light from darkness—a theme that resonates throughout the home.

One of the most striking features is the staircase, positioned as a visual centerpiece near the entrance. Its materials transition from deep wood to warm grain, glass, and white paint, mirroring the gradual arrival of dawn. The journey up the stairs culminates at a window, inviting natural daylight into the heart of the space. This thoughtful progression embodies the project’s central motif: the transformative power of light.

Functionality is seamlessly integrated with design. The kitchen’s relocation closer to the living area, combined with a kitchen island that merges into a sloped dining table, enhances both spatial flow and daily convenience. A 360-degree rotating TV wall blurs the boundaries between kitchen, dining, and living zones, fostering interaction and flexibility. This innovative element allows the family to remain connected, whether cooking, dining, or relaxing.

Material choices further elevate the project’s modern sensibility. Rock, fluorinated glass, wood veneer, and eco-friendly water-based paint are used to create depth and texture. The fluorinated glass above the staircase cleverly conceals lighting fixtures while reflecting a soft, diffused glow, amplifying the sense of spaciousness. Despite the compact 95.8-square-meter footprint, the design achieves an open, airy atmosphere through careful spatial planning and the strategic use of light.

Residents have praised the open-plan layout and expanded kitchen, which provide ample storage and encourage family interaction. The reconfigured staircase and rotating TV wall not only optimize circulation but also serve as focal points that define the home’s unique character. The project’s success is underscored by its recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its blend of creativity, technical skill, and contribution to quality of life.

“Eclipse” by AN.J Studio stands as a testament to the enduring allure of natural phenomena and the power of thoughtful design to transform everyday living. Through a harmonious balance of innovation, function, and artistry, the residence offers a tranquil retreat that celebrates both the mysteries of the cosmos and the comforts of home.
