Ibiuna Prefabricated: A Modular Retreat in Nature

Rodrigo Ohtake redefines weekend living with innovative modular design

Blending industrial precision with organic harmony, the Ibiuna Prefabricated house by Rodrigo Ohtake offers a fresh perspective on modular architecture, creating a unique sanctuary for relaxation and connection with nature.

Located in the lush countryside of Ibiuna, São Paulo, the Ibiuna Prefabricated house stands as a testament to the evolving possibilities of modular architecture. Designed by acclaimed architect Rodrigo Ohtake, this weekend house serves as a tranquil escape from urban life, allowing its inhabitants to immerse themselves in the surrounding natural beauty. The project’s location was chosen for its proximity to São Paulo and its abundant greenery, providing an ideal setting for a restorative retreat.

What distinguishes the Ibiuna Prefabricated house is its departure from the typical aesthetic of modular homes. Ohtake embraced the constraints of prefabrication, arranging the modular rooms apart to create a central void that functions as the social heart of the home. This space, covered by a striking industrial roof with curved lines, houses the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Curved walls and eaves on the façade further disrupt the conventional rectangular form, resulting in a dynamic and inviting structure.

The technical realization of the house was made possible through collaboration with the Syshaus team, who manufactured the prefabricated modules. The exterior features thermo-insulated industrial walls clad in aluminum, while bold blue perforated steel walls add visual interest and privacy. Inside, vibrant orange accents contrast with the verdant landscape, infusing the space with energy and joy. The integration of color, a hallmark of Ohtake’s studio, is intended to harmonize the man-made with the natural.

Functionality and personalization are at the core of the Ibiuna Prefabricated concept. The modular design allows for rapid assembly—typically within 120 days—and offers flexibility for customization according to individual preferences. This approach enables each home to deliver unique experiences, sensations, and practical benefits, moving beyond the limitations of standardized production. The living room, with its panoramic views of the trees, exemplifies the seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces.

The project also addresses sustainability and efficiency. The rationalized construction process minimizes waste and enhances thermal performance, aligning with contemporary environmental standards. The thoughtful integration of open spaces between modules not only fosters social interaction but also ensures the house remains in harmony with its natural surroundings. Artistic elements curated by Ohtake’s wife, an art curator, and custom-designed furniture further personalize the living environment.

Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, the Ibiuna Prefabricated house exemplifies how innovative design can reconcile industrial methods with creative expression. Rodrigo Ohtake’s vision demonstrates that prefabricated architecture can transcend its urban roots, offering a model for sustainable, joyful living in nature.

The Ibiuna Prefabricated house invites a reconsideration of what modular homes can achieve—blending efficiency, individuality, and a deep respect for the environment into a singular architectural experience.
