Inked Elegant: Redefining Apartment Living with Dark Hues

Yu Xuan Lai crafts a refined, spacious home with bold design choices

Inked Elegant, a residential apartment project by Yu Xuan Lai, transforms a dated layout into a sophisticated, open living environment, blending classical aesthetics with modern sensibilities and earning a Bronze A' Design Award for its innovation.

Inked Elegant addresses the challenges of an older apartment layout by reimagining spatial flow and functionality. The original configuration, which concealed the dining area and restricted air circulation, has been replaced with a design that prioritizes openness and connectivity. By removing unnecessary partitions and reconfiguring the movement lines between the living, dining, and kitchen areas, the space now encourages interaction and enhances daily living. The strategic use of glass sliding doors in the kitchen ensures both openness and practical separation from cooking fumes, while the entrance porch and shoe storage solutions maximize utility without compromising aesthetics.

The apartment’s visual identity is anchored in a palette inspired by the owner's affinity for dark wood textures. Black, gray, and white tones dominate, complemented by board and stretched leather fabric, creating a harmonious and elegant atmosphere. Localized wood accents add warmth, while the restrained color scheme lends a sense of calm and sophistication. The design extends to the master bedroom and bathroom, ensuring a cohesive experience throughout the 96-square-meter home.

Yu Xuan Lai’s approach integrates symmetry and spatial extension to amplify the sense of openness. The TV wall, for example, transcends structural limitations by visually stretching across the entire wall, using black stone to evoke simplicity and rationality. Lighting is thoughtfully layered, with box lights, wall lights, and indirect illumination that can be adjusted to suit different moods, seamlessly blending with the overall design language.

Functionality is at the forefront of Inked Elegant. The private and public zones are clearly delineated, with a door marking the transition between communal and retreat spaces. The master bedroom is designed to evoke the comfort of a hotel suite, featuring a low TV wall cabinet, a streamlined makeup table, and a wardrobe with a black glass door for privacy. The children’s room is tailored for both rest and study, offering ample storage and workspace. Throughout, the design responds to the needs of modern family life, optimizing every square meter for comfort and efficiency.

Overcoming significant structural challenges, such as large columns and beams, the design cleverly incorporates these elements into the overall aesthetic. Mirrors and storage solutions are used to enhance space and light, while ceiling treatments discreetly house essential infrastructure. These interventions not only resolve technical obstacles but also contribute to the apartment’s sense of spaciousness and order.

Inked Elegant stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in elevating everyday living. By balancing classical influences with contemporary needs, Yu Xuan Lai has created a home that is both personal and universally appealing, setting a new standard for residential interiors in Taiwan and beyond.

This project’s recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award underscores its excellence in combining art, science, and technology to improve quality of life, demonstrating how innovative design can make the world a better place.
