Greatest Luck: A Modern Family Residence Inspired by Korea

Blending hospitality, learning, and entertainment in a five-story home

Chien Sen Wang’s “Greatest Luck” residence in Taichung reimagines family living by merging modern design with the warmth of Korean hospitality, creating a versatile space that supports both family life and social gatherings.

Designed for a couple and their two children, the “Greatest Luck” residence prioritizes a clean, minimalist aesthetic while emphasizing quality of life, educational spaces, and a welcoming environment for guests. Drawing inspiration from the owner’s fondness for Korean restaurant culture, the design ensures that frequent visitors can be entertained without disrupting the children’s learning or daily routines.

The basement, ingeniously combined with the garage, serves as a guest house reminiscent of a Korean eatery. This area offers seamless access for visitors and features amenities such as an electric mahjong table, KTV club, wine refrigerator, and smart lighting, transforming what was once a long, narrow, and low-ceilinged space into a vibrant entertainment hub. A mirror ceiling visually expands the area, while a fireplace adds warmth and ambiance, overcoming the basement’s original limitations.

The first floor is dedicated to communal living, featuring an open kitchen with imported German appliances, handle-free cabinetry, and ample storage. The space is unified by a palette of classic black, white, and gray, complemented by marble flooring and artfully painted walls in soft, milk tea hues. Large windows and thoughtful lighting enhance the inviting atmosphere, making it ideal for family gatherings and culinary pursuits.

Private areas on the upper floors showcase modern bedrooms with personalized touches for each family member. The master bedroom utilizes a sophisticated mix of black, white, and gray, with walls finished in imitation water mold, cloud brush, and stone-effect paints. Intelligent lighting and carefully proportioned lines highlight the contemporary style, while children’s rooms are designed to balance comfort and function, supporting both rest and study.

Chien Sen Wang’s design process involved overcoming significant challenges, particularly in transforming the basement’s restrictive dimensions. By dividing the space strategically and employing visual tricks such as mirrored ceilings, the designer succeeded in creating a multifunctional area that feels spacious and inviting. The project, completed between September 2023 and January 2024, stands as a testament to the integration of modern aesthetics, practical solutions, and cultural inspiration.

Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, “Greatest Luck” exemplifies how thoughtful interior design can elevate everyday living, foster meaningful connections, and create a harmonious environment for both family and friends.
