Blending Chinese and Spanish Traditions in a Modern Taiwanese Home

Nestled in the countryside of Yilan, Taiwan, Spiritual Casa is a four-story residence that artfully unites the cultural identities of its Spanish and Taiwanese owners. The design draws inspiration from both Chinese and Spanish traditions, with each architectural and decorative element thoughtfully curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia and belonging. The triangular roof, Spanish tiles, and intricate Chinese totems are not merely aesthetic choices but serve as bridges between two distinct worlds, connecting people to their roots and the land they inhabit.

The unique character of Spiritual Casa lies in its meticulous blend of materials and motifs. Spanish architectural features such as triangular wooden beams, a central island bar, and vibrant tile accents are juxtaposed with Chinese elements like screens, flowering crabapple motifs, and antique coin patterns. Hand-woven rattan furniture, crafted by local artisans using traditional mortise and tenon joints, further highlights the commitment to local craftsmanship and cultural preservation.

Functionality and flow are central to the home’s design. Glass tiles and low cabinets at the entryway create a smooth transition between the kitchen and living room, maintaining an open and airy atmosphere. The kitchen’s hollow-square layout, with a central island, encourages easy movement, while the master bedroom continues this theme with a central chest of drawers and dual aisles, ensuring convenience and simplicity. Even practical elements, such as the even-topped cabinets, are designed to promote a sense of order and tranquility.

Material selection and color palette play a crucial role in establishing the home’s ambiance. Neutral earth tones, including shades of grey and milk-tea, provide a calming backdrop, while vibrant Spanish tiles and traditional Chinese motifs add character and warmth. The use of natural rattan not only enhances ventilation and moisture control but also echoes the retro charm of 1960s Taiwan, further enriching the home’s narrative.

Overcoming architectural challenges, such as the constraints posed by beams and stairs on the first floor, the design team cleverly incorporated a triangular roof in the kitchen to elevate the space and restore the essence of Spanish architecture. The living room’s circular arc ceiling, inspired by Chinese design, softens the spatial lines while accommodating modern needs like air conditioning. These solutions exemplify the thoughtful balance between tradition and innovation that defines Spiritual Casa.
