Arc Radiance, a 93-square-meter apartment in Taichung City, exemplifies the fusion of comfort and ingenuity in contemporary residential design. The project responds to the homeowners’ desire for a "warm and sweet" atmosphere by embracing natural wood materials, gentle color palettes, and a sophisticated lighting strategy. Embedded lamps and linear lighting create indirect, uniform illumination, enhancing the sense of tranquility and adaptability throughout the space.
One of the apartment’s standout features is its multifunctional entryway cabinet, which seamlessly integrates a shoe rack, storage platform, laundry wardrobe, and seating. This thoughtful approach maximizes utility in a compact area, while the open-plan living and dining zones utilize light hues and cylindrical grille panels to foster a welcoming environment. The design’s commitment to gentle living is evident in every detail, from the soft curves of the TV wall to the unobtrusive storage solutions.
Spatial challenges, such as the limited distance between the TV and sofa walls, are addressed through a parallel expansion technique. By extending the curved modeling wall and cylindrical grating panels toward the entryway, the visual field is broadened, diminishing the perception of spatial constraints. This clever manipulation of perspective not only enlarges the living area but also introduces a dynamic architectural rhythm.
The children’s room is designed with flexibility in mind, featuring a platform that easily converts into a wide bed for up to four people, while maintaining ample open space for play and interaction. The use of pale milk tones and indirect lighting in communal areas further accentuates the apartment’s soft, inviting character, supporting family connection and relaxation.
Technical innovation is also present in the entryway’s construction. The floor is excavated to the reinforced concrete layer and finished with scratch-resistant terrazzo, creating a five-centimeter height difference that effectively traps dust and enhances durability. This area not only serves as a functional dust barrier but also sets an elegant tone upon entry, balancing practicality with aesthetic appeal.
Despite the challenge of three substantial ceiling beams, Bo Yan Chen employs height variation and curved lines to visually blur and minimize their impact, preserving the openness and comfort of the living space. The expanded kitchen entrance, fitted with a gray glass sliding door, allows for easy supervision of children, further supporting the apartment’s family-friendly ethos.
Arc Radiance’s innovative solutions and refined ambiance have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design for 2025. This recognition highlights the project’s excellence in integrating art, science, and technology to elevate everyday living and inspire future residential design.
