Guan Yu Lai crafts a flexible, open-plan apartment for evolving family needs

Serene Luxe, a 163-square-meter apartment in Taichung City, exemplifies the seamless integration of form and function. Guan Yu Lai’s vision centers on creating a home that supports both present comfort and future growth, particularly for families with young children. The project began in January 2023 and concluded in October 2023, resulting in a space that balances minimalist aesthetics with practical living solutions.

The apartment’s open-plan common area establishes a sense of spaciousness and encourages direct interaction among family members. Light colors and simple lines dominate the public spaces, fostering a clean and inviting atmosphere. The design deliberately connects the dining table with the kitchen island, expanding meal preparation areas while offering a versatile spot for children’s activities. This thoughtful arrangement allows parents to supervise and engage with their children during daily routines.

Private areas are carefully zoned, with three bedrooms tailored to the needs of a growing family. The master suite features a distinctive curved half-wall, subtly delineating the dressing area without sacrificing light or spatial flow. This partial partition enhances the sense of openness, a hallmark of the apartment’s overall design language. Each bedroom is designed to adapt over time, ensuring the home remains functional as family dynamics evolve.

Storage solutions are a standout feature, achieved through custom cabinetry that maximizes capacity without overwhelming the space. The living room’s hanging TV cabinet, for example, is designed to be lightweight and visually unobtrusive, incorporating both open and closed elements. Integrated lighting, including linear and embedded fixtures, further enhances the apartment’s airy feel while providing practical illumination.

Material selection posed a creative challenge, requiring careful coordination of colors and textures to maintain visual harmony. Grey tones unify the living area and kitchen, while subtle color echoes in cabinetry and furnishings prevent abrupt transitions. This meticulous approach ensures a cohesive environment that feels both tranquil and sophisticated.

Serene Luxe’s innovative design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its practical yet imaginative solutions. Guan Yu Lai’s work stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in shaping homes that are both beautiful and adaptable, meeting the evolving needs of modern families.
