Cheers To Macau stands as a striking example of how design can bridge history, culture, and sustainability. Conceived by Lampo Leong and Chao Yang, the project reimagines aluminum beer cans as crumpled porcelain artworks, symbolizing Macau’s unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. This transformation not only elevates a common object into a work of art but also highlights the region’s ongoing dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The design draws inspiration from Macau’s rich cultural tapestry. Iconic motifs such as the Ruins of St. Paul’s, intricate Portuguese tile patterns, and bilingual Chinese-English text are intricately rendered on the porcelain surface. Dynamic gold accents and expressive Chinese calligraphy, inspired by the city’s lotus flower, further enrich the visual narrative. The fusion of traditional Chinese art with the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism creates a compelling cross-cultural conversation.
Technically, the project employs advanced porcelain sculpting techniques, allowing for variable display formats. The porcelain cans can be hung as wall installations or showcased within acrylic box frames, offering flexibility for galleries and collectors. This adaptability underscores the design’s innovative approach to both form and function.
Cheers To Macau has garnered international acclaim, with exhibitions at the Macao Contemporary Art Center and prestigious awards such as the RedDot Award: Best of the Best in Berlin and a Bronze A’ Design Award in 2025. The project’s conceptual depth is further enhanced by its references to ancient Chinese poetry and historical quotes, weaving together Macau’s past and present in a visually arresting manner.
By transforming disposable objects into enduring art, Cheers To Macau not only celebrates Macau’s cultural heritage but also promotes environmental consciousness. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can inspire reflection on sustainability while honoring the spirit of a place.
Cheers To Macau invites viewers to explore the intersection of art, history, and innovation—encouraging a deeper appreciation for cultural identity and creative reuse in contemporary design.
