The international environmental crisis of global warming has inspired artists worldwide to create works that provoke reflection and action. “Icy Fire,” an immersive digital art installation by Lampo Leong and Yanxiu Zhao, stands out for its innovative approach. Drawing on the rich textures of Chinese ink painting and the expressive power of geometric and gestural abstraction, the installation depicts a glacier’s transformation from ice to fire—a powerful metaphor for the planet’s shifting climate.
What distinguishes “Icy Fire” is its dynamic color palette, which shifts from cool blues to intense reds, visually narrating the distressing effects of global warming. The installation’s finale, where the text appears to refreeze, offers a rare note of optimism, symbolizing the hope that collective action can reverse environmental damage. This unique blend of traditional ink artistry and environmental consciousness propels Chinese ink painting into the digital age, demonstrating its continued relevance and adaptability.
The realization of “Icy Fire” began with hand-painted ink works on rice paper, which were then digitized using high-resolution scanning technology. The digital images were animated using TouchDesigner, a cutting-edge visual programming tool, to create fluid, generative video art. The installation’s physical space amplifies its immersive quality: a single wall becomes a canvas for the digital projection, while acrylic mirrors on the remaining walls, ceiling, and floor reflect and multiply the imagery, enveloping viewers in a transformative environment measuring 5.3 by 3 by 4 meters.
Exhibited at prominent venues such as the Macao Museum of Art, Guangdong Museum of Art, and Shenzhen Art Museum, “Icy Fire” has captivated audiences since its debut in 2024. The project’s research-driven approach is evident in its thoughtful use of color and motion to communicate the gravity of climate change, while the technical challenge of translating classical ink techniques into a postmodern digital format highlights the designers’ creative ingenuity.
Awarded the Bronze A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2025, “Icy Fire” exemplifies how art, science, and technology can converge to raise awareness and inspire positive change. The installation not only celebrates the enduring vitality of Chinese ink but also calls for a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship, making a compelling case for the role of contemporary art in shaping a sustainable future.
