Located in the culturally significant Changning District of Shanghai, Lilong Arcade stands as a testament to adaptive urban design. The project draws inspiration from the classic arcade motif, a symbol of public sharing and connectivity, to create a space that honors the city’s architectural legacy while addressing the evolving needs of its residents. By integrating historical features with modern materials, the design transforms the building into a natural extension of the city’s walkable street system, fostering a sense of belonging and engagement among citizens.
One of the defining features of Lilong Arcade is its flexible spatial layout. Jiahua Xu’s approach maximizes the use of limited space by combining fixed and adaptable areas. This strategy allows the community center to support a diverse array of activities, from children’s daycare and elderly wellness programs to sports and retail. The facade, characterized by light-colored bricks and expansive glass windows, maintains harmony with the surrounding architecture while enhancing openness and transparency. The inclusion of an internal atrium further improves natural lighting and alleviates the sense of confinement, creating a welcoming environment for all visitors.
Technically, the project navigates significant constraints. The reconstruction was required to remain within the original building’s three-dimensional boundaries, limiting the potential for vertical expansion. To address the challenge of a modest ceiling height of approximately 3.5 meters, the design employs small column spans and shallow beams, achieving spans of 4.5 to 6 meters. This structural solution not only optimizes space but also increases the permeability and flexibility of the interior, supporting a wide range of community functions.
Research into the local context played a crucial role in shaping the project. The facade’s modern eclectic arcade form pays homage to traditional Shanghai architecture, while the use of light-colored bricks and floor-to-ceiling windows creates a visual connection with the neighborhood. The arcade itself serves as a “gray space,” inviting public interaction and enhancing the building’s transparency. This thoughtful integration of old and new demonstrates a commitment to cultural preservation and urban vitality.
Lilong Arcade’s innovative design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2025. This accolade celebrates projects that combine technical excellence with creative ingenuity, improving quality of life and contributing to the betterment of urban environments. Jiahua Xu’s work exemplifies how architecture can bridge history and modernity, offering adaptable, inclusive spaces that enrich community life.
By respecting the historical context and prioritizing flexibility, Lilong Arcade sets a benchmark for future community-centered developments. The project not only revitalizes a historic district but also demonstrates the transformative power of thoughtful design in fostering social interaction, adaptability, and cultural continuity in contemporary cities.
