Brilliance: Illuminating Lingnan Culture Through Copper Art

Chen Xin’s award-winning public artwork celebrates tradition and innovation in Guangzhou.

Drawing inspiration from the shimmering blue waves and golden light of the Pearl River, “Brilliance” stands as a testament to the enduring connection between nature and culture in Lingnan. The artwork features eight copper fish, their forms enhanced by golden edges and a translucent jasper hue, symbolizing honor, prosperity, and elegance. This visual language not only pays homage to the region’s artistic traditions but also introduces innovative elements through the integration of Chen Xin’s signature “Yeshan Fish” carvings.

What distinguishes “Brilliance” is its seamless blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. The project brought together renowned Lingnan copper artist Chen Huanzhi and automotive designer Chen Xin, fostering a unique cross-disciplinary collaboration. The result is a dynamic installation that radiates golden light, with each fish exuding a jade-like luster. This interplay of materials and symbolism embodies the leisurely, harmonious lifestyle associated with Guangzhou, while also highlighting the prosperity envisioned for the ONE PENGRUI development.

The realization of “Brilliance” involved advanced techniques to enhance both durability and visual impact. A meticulously designed lighting system at the sculpture’s base bathes the artwork in a tranquil glow, using a combination of cool and warm lights to accentuate its three-dimensional form. Anti-corrosion treatments and strict maintenance protocols ensure the copper’s brilliance endures, underscoring a commitment to both cultural preservation and audience experience.

Interaction with the surrounding space was a central consideration in the design process. The arrangement of the fish creates dynamic visual lines that guide viewers through the courtyard, alleviating spatial constraints and fostering a sense of relaxation. This thoughtful integration transforms the artwork into a living part of the environment, elevating the artistic ambiance and reflecting the city’s leisurely pace of life.

Installed at ONE PENGRUI in Guangzhou in 2024, “Brilliance” continues to captivate the public, serving as a symbol of the city’s vibrant cultural identity. The project’s innovative approach and artistic excellence have been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2025, affirming its status as a trendsetting contribution to contemporary public art.
