Low Key Luxury: Tranquil Modern Living by Wei-Li Chen

Modern design meets understated elegance in a serene family retreat.

Wei-Li Chen’s “Low Key Luxury” residence in Taiwan redefines contemporary living, blending sophisticated design with comfort to create a peaceful sanctuary for a family of four.

Set within a spacious 165.2-square-meter duplex, “Low Key Luxury” was envisioned as a tranquil escape for a finance professional and family. The design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor elements, with sleek lines and abundant natural light guiding the eye toward lush exterior views. This approach not only enhances the sense of openness but also fosters a calming atmosphere, providing a much-needed refuge from the demands of daily life.

The residence’s unique character is established from the moment one enters the long foyer, where a marble wall edged in titanium plating exudes quiet sophistication. Built-in shoe cabinets and seating blend practicality with style, while the open-plan living and dining areas are defined by layered grilles, wood flooring, and ambient lighting. Titanium-plated accents on the TV wall and beams add subtle luxury, and each private space is thoughtfully tailored: the boy’s room combines gray and wood, the master bedroom offers warm tones and a study, and the girl’s room features a neutral yet feminine palette with an en-suite bath designed for relaxation.

Material selection plays a pivotal role in achieving the residence’s understated elegance. The palette includes marble, wood veneer, special paints, high-pressure laminates, and titanium-plated metal, all unified by warm, earthy tones reminiscent of autumn. According to Wei-Li Chen, “Luxury does not mean a bright color palette.” Instead, shimmering details and a consistent color scheme create depth and continuity, while green building materials and layered lighting contribute to both visual comfort and sustainability.

Spatial planning was meticulously executed to maximize comfort and functionality. The designer adhered to Feng Shui principles, using symbolic dimensions for key areas such as the foyer and master bedroom desk. The entrance was repositioned, and dining room walls were moved to expand social spaces, reflecting the hostess’s preference for warm, inviting hues. Wide openings and generous radii in each area allow natural light to flood the interiors, enhancing the sense of openness and well-being.

Throughout the project, attention to detail and client collaboration were paramount. Wei-Li Chen emphasizes the importance of simulating real living experiences to ensure that every design choice serves daily life. This dedication to quality and creativity resulted in a home that not only meets but exceeds the family’s expectations, transforming the client-designer relationship into a lasting friendship.

“Low Key Luxury” stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in elevating everyday living. Awarded Bronze in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies best practices in art, design, and technology, making a meaningful contribution to quality of life and modern residential aesthetics.
