Harmony in Design: Tsong Yo’s Award-Winning Language Center

Blending Chinese tradition with modern innovation for a global learning space

Tsong Yo Interior Design’s Language Center at Tunghai University reimagines educational spaces, merging classical Chinese aesthetics with contemporary design to foster cultural exchange and academic excellence.

The Language Center, completed in July 2024 in Taiwan, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of heritage and innovation. Tsong Yo Interior Design drew inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture, specifically wooden eaves and sandalwood elements, while infusing the space with international appeal. The design’s foundation lies in the yin-yang philosophy, emphasizing harmony and balance through both form and function. By reinterpreting campus architecture and preserving original materials, the project bridges the gap between the past and the present, creating a welcoming environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

Central to the Language Center’s uniqueness is its application of Tai Chi principles. Black-and-white patterns symbolize equilibrium, while a cross-shaped circulation plan maximizes spatial flow and natural light. The entrance, redesigned for openness, connects key areas such as the lounge, reading zone, and offices, encouraging interaction and movement. Retro terrazzo flooring and deep wood tones pay homage to Taiwan’s cultural identity, while transparent design elements evoke the warmth of a traditional three-section compound house. This thoughtful blend of classical and local motifs ensures the space remains rooted in its cultural context.

Sustainability and eco-friendly practices are at the heart of the project’s realization. The use of natural wood veneer for ceilings and window frames, alongside the preservation of original terrazzo flooring, highlights a commitment to environmental responsibility. The color palette, inspired by Tai Chi, features a striking interplay of pure whites and deep grays, balancing brightness with tranquility. This approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also reflects a sophisticated understanding of both traditional and modern design sensibilities.

Spanning 296 square meters, the Language Center’s layout prioritizes openness and connectivity. Large floor-to-ceiling windows offer unobstructed views of the central courtyard, flooding the interior with natural light and reinforcing the sense of spaciousness. Classrooms are strategically zoned for functionality, with clear pathways ensuring efficient circulation. Feedback from users has been overwhelmingly positive, with teachers and students praising the brighter, more inviting atmosphere and the space’s ability to support both learning and relaxation.

The renovation process presented unique challenges, particularly in restoring the original terrazzo and brickwork while addressing height discrepancies. Suspended lighting was meticulously planned to provide even illumination, minimizing shadows and enhancing the learning environment. These technical solutions, combined with the preservation of cultural symbols and scholarly ambiance, contribute to the Language Center’s status as a model for educational design.

Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Tsong Yo Interior Design’s Language Center exemplifies excellence in interior space innovation. By honoring tradition while embracing modernity, the project sets a new standard for academic environments that inspire, connect, and endure.
