Terrasta stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design in urban revitalization. Developed by Uds Ltd. in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this mixed-use hotel in Miyakonojo City, northern Kyushu, Japan, reimagines the traditional hotel concept. The project’s name, a fusion of “terrace” and “stage,” reflects its mission to foster communal interaction and support individual experiences. By integrating public terraces and stairways with interior spaces, Terrasta encourages seamless movement between the city’s plaza and the hotel, fostering a lively sense of community.
Central to Terrasta’s uniqueness is its commitment to local identity and collaboration. The hotel’s design incorporates Shinmoe Brick, made from volcanic ash sourced from nearby Mt. Shinmoe, and Takachiho Shirasu plaster, alongside local lava stones. These materials pay homage to the region’s history and harmonize with the surrounding architecture. Inside, warm brick tones, wood, and brass elements blend with Japanese aesthetics, while collaborations with local artists, designers, and students infuse the space with creative energy and authenticity.
The seven-story steel structure spans approximately 8,535 square meters and houses 93 guest rooms, two restaurants, and a public lounge. Beyond traditional hospitality, Terrasta features a supermarket, rental office spaces, a local radio station, and multiple tenant areas. This diverse mix of amenities supports daily life for residents and visitors alike, positioning the hotel as a new community anchor. The open-plan lobby, adorned with local artworks, serves as both a welcoming space for guests and a communal lounge for the city’s residents.
Terrasta’s realization was guided by extensive research into Miyakonojo’s evolving needs. Once a bustling shopping district, the area faced decline in the 1980s. The project aimed to reverse this trend by attracting visitors and supporting local businesses. Partnerships with over ten local artists and shops resulted in unique art installations and guestroom designs, while amenities and tableware were sourced from the region. Workshops with students from a local design school further enriched the creative process, bringing fresh perspectives to the project.
Challenges in balancing creativity, technical requirements, and community engagement were met through efficient research and collaboration. The result is a vibrant space that celebrates Miyakonojo’s heritage while embracing its future. Terrasta’s sustainable approach, use of local materials, and emphasis on community-driven design have earned it the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation in interior space and exhibition design.
Terrasta exemplifies how architecture and design can breathe new life into a city, offering a blueprint for future projects that seek to blend tradition, innovation, and community spirit. Its success highlights the importance of local collaboration and creative vision in shaping spaces that inspire connection and growth.
