Located in the heart of Okinawa Island, Ref Okinawa Arena stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Unlike the typical seaside resorts, this inland hotel draws inspiration from the Okinawan word “Champuru,” meaning “mixed,” to symbolize the harmonious fusion of traditional Okinawan, Japanese, Southeast Asian, and American influences. By collaborating with local artists and the hometown basketball team, the project integrates community pride and multicultural charm, offering guests an immersive experience rooted in local identity.
The hotel’s architecture pays homage to Okinawa’s heritage through its modern interpretation of the “hana-block,” a traditional vent block. The dynamic facade features alternating tropical green and brick red hues, reflecting the island’s lush environment and clay architecture. This thoughtful design creates a lively visual effect, shifting with the viewer’s perspective and encapsulating the vibrant spirit of Okinawa. Inside, each floor presents a unique color scheme, adding playful variety and reinforcing the hotel’s distinctive character.
Ref Okinawa Arena’s eight-story structure houses 150 guest rooms, multiple restaurants, meeting spaces, a sauna, a pool, and a rooftop bar. The first two floors serve as multifunctional community spaces, seamlessly connected by a central staircase and opening onto a terrace garden. This design links the hotel to the adjacent public park, creating an inviting lounge for locals and fostering a sense of belonging. The rooftop pool and music bar, inspired by the nearby “Music Town,” encourage interaction and activity from day to night, further enhancing the neighborhood’s vibrancy.
The project’s development, which began in May 2021 and concluded in July 2023, was strategically timed to coincide with the Basketball World Cup at the nearby Okinawa Arena. To honor the local basketball team, Uds Ltd. collaborated with artists to design two themed guest rooms, celebrating the team’s identity and deepening community ties. This approach highlights how commercial ventures can meaningfully integrate with their surroundings, promoting environmental consciousness and local pride.
Ref Okinawa Arena addresses the challenge of showcasing Okinawa’s often-overlooked inland culture. By focusing on community engagement and blending seamlessly with the surrounding greenery under Park PFI regulations, the hotel sets a new standard for hospitality. The project’s recognition with the Iron A’ Design Award underscores its success in combining practical innovation with cultural sensitivity, contributing to a richer, more inclusive urban landscape.
Ref Okinawa Arena exemplifies how thoughtful design can transcend traditional hospitality, fostering genuine connections and celebrating the multifaceted heritage of Okinawa. The hotel not only enhances guest experiences but also strengthens the local community, setting a benchmark for future developments in the region.
