Realm of Clouds: Urban Living in a Green Sanctuary

Ming Hsing Chang’s biophilic design redefines sustainable luxury in Taichung

Realm of Clouds, designed by Ming Hsing Chang, stands as a testament to the evolving relationship between architecture and nature. Located in Taichung, Taiwan, this exclusive residential project comprises only 11 units, each enveloped in lush greenery and natural stone. The design draws from biophilic principles, integrating multi-tiered vegetation and green façades to create a mountain-like landscape, fostering both privacy and sensory immersion for its residents.

The project’s unique approach lies in its seamless blend of built form and organic elements. Cascading plants, self-sustaining green walls, and locally sourced materials establish a living, breathing environment. Panoramic glass walls and open-plan interiors blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, ensuring unobstructed views of verdant gardens while maximizing natural light and air flow. This focus on spatial fluidity and sensory-driven design elevates the daily experience, making each residence a private retreat within the city.

Sustainability is at the core of Realm of Clouds. The architecture employs advanced passive cooling, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient lighting to minimize environmental impact. The green façade not only supports biodiversity but also acts as natural insulation, reducing energy consumption. Recycled wood and native stone further enhance the project’s eco-responsibility, while independent entrances and private pathways maintain exclusivity and personal space.

Research played a pivotal role in shaping the project’s vision. Studies on microclimates, multi-tiered forestry, and spatial efficiency informed the selection of native plants and the implementation of cross-ventilation systems. The design team overcame significant challenges, particularly in constructing the multi-layered green façade, which required innovative structural solutions to balance longevity with aesthetic appeal.
