Source of Subtle Waves, designed by Jie Zhang, reimagines the packaging of traditional Jiang flavour Baijiu by merging cultural heritage with modern design. The waterdrop-shaped bottle, inspired by the transformation of grain and water into Baijiu, symbolizes the meticulous brewing process. This form not only reflects the journey from raw ingredients to refined spirit but also highlights the craftsmanship of the brewer, offering a visual narrative that resonates with the values of patience and artistry.

The design’s most distinctive feature is its interplay between metal and ceramic, embodying the balance of strength and gentleness central to Eastern aesthetics. The ceramic body, produced using Jingdezhen firing techniques, is adorned with high-temperature relief decals, creating a textured, three-dimensional surface that is both visually striking and tactile. The gold-plated metal accents further enhance the sense of refinement, while the cap—modeled after ancient scholar headdresses—adds a dignified, poetic touch, connecting the act of drinking to the rich culture of Chinese poetry and scholarship.

Functionality is seamlessly integrated into the design. The ceramic material ensures breathability, maintaining optimal humidity for the liquor and preserving its quality. Its high chemical resistance protects the Baijiu from acid and alkali corrosion, ensuring purity and longevity. The ergonomic shape, with a wider midsection and a symmetrical 5:5 ratio between the body and neck, facilitates comfortable handling and precise pouring, making the experience both practical and elegant.

Environmental responsibility is also a key consideration. The use of ceramics, known for low energy and material consumption during firing, aligns with green production standards. This commitment to sustainability does not compromise the product’s artistic value, as the intricate craftsmanship and material choices elevate the packaging to the status of a collectible art piece.

Source of Subtle Waves stands out for its ability to harmonize contrasting qualities—strength and gentleness, tradition and innovation. The design moves away from the rustic styles typical of Jiang flavour Baijiu, instead presenting a sophisticated, culturally meaningful vessel that honors Chinese heritage while appealing to contemporary sensibilities. This achievement was recognized with a Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, celebrating its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
