The Sakura Cyclone table, conceived by designer Tomoaki Kageyama, stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s cherished cherry blossom, or sakura, the table is designed to evoke the transient splendor of these iconic blooms. In Japanese culture, cherry blossoms symbolize the beauty and brevity of life, blooming for just a week each year. Kageyama’s creation seeks to encapsulate this momentary brilliance, offering a daily reminder of nature’s poetic cycles within the home.
Crafted from molded cherry plywood, the Sakura Cyclone is more than a functional piece—it is a sculptural work that interacts dynamically with its environment. By day, the table’s organic form resembles a robust cherry tree rooted in the earth, inviting users to relax with tea or a book. As evening falls and light illuminates the room, the table’s unique construction casts intricate shadows that mimic cherry blossoms in full bloom, transforming ordinary spaces into enchanting scenes. This duality of form and shadow is achieved through meticulous engineering, including adjustable plywood angles and wire mechanisms that fine-tune the shadow’s clarity and shape.
The table’s production took place in the Hida region of Japan, an area renowned for its furniture craftsmanship. Measuring 400mm in height, depth, and width, the Sakura Cyclone is compact yet impactful, making it suitable for both residential and hospitality settings. Its design process was deeply informed by Japanese aesthetics, particularly the philosophy outlined in Junichiro Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows.” Kageyama’s research emphasized the subtle interplay between light and shadow—a concept central to traditional Japanese interiors but often overlooked in modern design.
Developing the Sakura Cyclone presented several creative and technical challenges. Achieving the precise shadow effect required extensive experimentation with scale models and lighting conditions. The final solution involved diagonally mating curved wood components, ensuring that the shadow blossoms only appear when the pendant light is switched on at night. This attention to detail not only enhances the table’s visual impact but also invites users to experience their environment in a new, contemplative way.
The Sakura Cyclone’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, the design was awarded the Silver A' Furniture Design Award, recognizing its exceptional blend of artistic skill, technical mastery, and emotional resonance. By transforming a simple table into a canvas for light and shadow, Tomoaki Kageyama has created a piece that celebrates both the enduring and ephemeral qualities of Japanese culture—inviting admiration, wonder, and reflection with every use.
