Urban Clouds: Redefining Urban Living with Nature-Inspired Design

Modern architecture meets cultural heritage in Taiwan’s award-winning residence.

Urban Clouds, designed by Ya-Yuan Design and Shanghefa Development, stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of modern architecture and cultural heritage, offering a refined lifestyle experience in the heart of Taiwan’s administrative and cultural district.

Located within a vibrant cultural center and surrounded by expansive green spaces, Urban Clouds sets a new standard for congregate housing by blending elegance, functionality, and a strong sense of place. The design draws inspiration from the natural beauty of drifting clouds, aiming to create a grand yet understated architectural presence that complements its environment. This approach is evident in the building’s roof, where parametric design techniques translate the ephemeral forms of clouds into a striking two-dimensional structure, allowing light and shadow to animate the facade throughout the day.

The building’s exterior features a sophisticated beam and column system, lending a refined modern image while enhancing structural integrity. Inside, the first-floor lobby captivates with a ceiling installation of metal units that visualize the flow of wind, fostering a serene atmosphere and reinforcing the connection between the urban environment and nature. The use of beige-gray marble with delicate veining, paired with silver-glimmering glazed wall tiles, creates a warm, textured, and luminous living environment. Transparent glass and clean lines further accentuate the interplay of light and shadow, contributing to the building’s inviting ambiance.

Spanning 1,078 square meters with a 15-story structure, Urban Clouds employs a dual-volume layout to reduce visual mass and add architectural layers, making the building approachable and visually engaging. The interior layout is meticulously planned to support modern living needs, ensuring smooth flow and compliance with building regulations. Each design detail is carefully considered to balance aesthetics with functionality, resulting in a space that is both efficient and visually appealing.

One of the project’s most distinctive features is the integration of an art installation in the lobby, which evokes the sensation of a gentle breeze and floating clouds. This installation, combined with calibrated nighttime lighting, ensures the building remains welcoming and elegant after dark, highlighting its architectural features and enhancing its presence within the cityscape. The design team, led by Feng-Huang Pan, Anson Chen, Chun-Yao Hu, and Jun-Kai Wang, overcame the challenge of working with a predetermined floor plan by leveraging digital tools like Grasshopper to translate natural forms into architectural elements, demonstrating innovation in both concept and execution.

Urban Clouds was completed in December 2023 and has since garnered significant recognition, including the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2025. The project exemplifies how contemporary urban residences can offer more than just shelter, providing a tranquil haven that seamlessly integrates nature, culture, and modern living for a truly elevated lifestyle experience.

Urban Clouds not only advances architectural design but also reimagines the relationship between city dwellers and their environment, setting a benchmark for future developments in urban residential living.
