Located in Ehime, Japan, Itomachi Hotel 0 redefines the relationship between architecture, environment, and community. The design draws from Saijo’s famed Uchinuki groundwater and the region’s distinctive Iyo Blue Stone, both of which are woven into the hotel’s aesthetic and functional identity. The use of these local elements not only honors the area’s heritage but also provides guests with an immersive experience of Saijo’s natural beauty.
Central to the hotel’s concept is its commitment to sustainability. Itomachi Hotel 0 is powered by solar energy and constructed with ecological materials, making it the first hotel in Japan to achieve Net Zero Energy Building certification. This achievement aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sets a new standard for environmentally conscious hospitality in the region.
The interior design places Uchinuki at the heart of the guest experience. Each room features an open-format washbasin that symbolizes the abundance of local water, while villa accommodations offer open-air baths supplied by natural hot springs. The sound of water is a constant presence, with Uchinuki also featured in the central courtyard, creating a tranquil ambiance throughout the property. The color palette, inspired by the changing tones of Iyo Blue Stone, further reinforces the connection to place.
Beyond aesthetics, the hotel integrates sustainable materials such as recycled glass, fibers, and traditional crafts like washi paper and ceramics. These choices not only reduce environmental impact but also support local artisans and industries. The inclusion of co-working spaces and communal kitchens addresses the needs of business travelers and urban workers seeking workation opportunities, making the hotel a versatile destination for both leisure and professional stays.
Itomachi Hotel 0 was conceived as a response to the challenges of population decline and urban decay in rural Japan. By celebrating Saijo’s unique resources and fostering economic activity, the hotel serves as a catalyst for community revitalization. Its recognition with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025 underscores its innovative approach and contribution to a more sustainable and fulfilling world.
Itomachi Hotel 0 exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge tradition and innovation, offering a blueprint for future developments that aspire to enrich both their environment and community.
