Zaku Naguwashi: Sake Packaging Inspired by Japanese Spirituality

Traditional motifs redefine sake for global luxury dining experiences

Yasushi Uemura’s Zaku Naguwashi Series elevates Japanese sake packaging, blending ancient symbolism with modern luxury to captivate international palates.

The Zaku Naguwashi Series, designed by Yasushi Uemura, introduces a new chapter in the global appreciation of Japanese sake. Drawing from the deep well of Japanese spirituality, the design incorporates traditional elements such as "shide"—the sacred paper streamers found in Shinto shrines—and "origata," the ceremonial art of paper folding. These motifs are not only visually striking but also serve as cultural signifiers, instantly communicating the heritage and essence of Japanese craftsmanship to a worldwide audience.

Targeted at luxury restaurants in Europe and America, the Zaku Naguwashi Series aims to position sake alongside fine wines on curated menus. The intention is to offer diners a broader spectrum of pairing options, inviting them to explore new flavors while fostering a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture. This approach addresses a growing trend: sake’s rising popularity in Western markets, where clarity and cultural context are essential for engaging new consumers.

One of the series’ most distinctive features is its label design. Small, manually cut holes evoke the folded shapes of ceremonial paper, a subtle yet powerful nod to Japanese tradition. The use of synthetic paper ensures durability in restaurant settings, particularly when bottles are chilled, while maintaining the tactile and visual qualities of traditional Japanese paper. This fusion of form and function exemplifies the meticulous attention to detail that characterizes Uemura’s work.

The project began in Mie Prefecture, Japan, in 2020, culminating in the launch of three varieties by April 2023. Since then, the sake has found its way onto menus in Tokyo and across Europe and the United States, where it continues to intrigue sommeliers and diners alike. The design’s success is underscored by its recognition at the 2025 Golden A' Packaging Design Award, a testament to its innovative approach and cultural resonance.

Research for the Zaku Naguwashi Series revealed a key challenge: sake bottles often resemble wine bottles, leading to confusion among Western consumers. By integrating unmistakably Japanese imagery, the design ensures immediate recognition, setting the product apart in a crowded market. This thoughtful approach not only enhances the dining experience but also sparks curiosity about Japanese traditions and craftsmanship.

The Zaku Naguwashi Series stands as a compelling example of how design can bridge cultures, transforming a centuries-old beverage into a modern luxury experience. As sake continues to gain international acclaim, this project demonstrates the power of thoughtful design to both honor tradition and invite new audiences into its story.
