Crafting 1000 Scenes: A Coffee Shop of Light and Reflection

Layered design and mirror effects create a sensory urban retreat

Hou Chun Chen and Hao Hong Lin transform a former apparel store in Taipei into a coffee shop where light, shadow, and mirrors evoke the beauty of changing seasons and offer a sanctuary in the city.

Located in the bustling Beitou District of Taipei, "Crafting 1000 Scenes" reimagines the traditional coffee shop experience. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese concept of "Chian Jing," meaning "thousand scenes," the design tells a visual story through the interplay of light, shadow, and reflective surfaces. Unlike conventional coffee shops that prioritize merchandise displays or seating arrangements, this project uses a blend of materials and contrasting techniques to immerse visitors in a dynamic, ever-changing environment.

The transformation of this 18-year-old, two-story, 66-square-meter space demonstrates a commitment to both artistry and function. The first floor features a soaring 4-meter vaulted ceiling painted in a refreshing turquoise, complemented by brass pendant lights that evoke classic British style. Continuous mirrors stretch from the façade to the ceiling, creating an illusion of expanded space and inviting guests to explore a world of layered reflections. This design approach not only addresses the building's narrow layout but also enhances the sense of openness and tranquility.

Material selection is central to the shop's unique atmosphere. Mirror surfaces, decorative coatings, metalwork, melamine boards, and flame-retardant PVC tiles are thoughtfully integrated. The designers minimize synthetic materials, opting instead for low-VOC wood panels and eco-friendly paints to ensure a healthy, sustainable environment. Mineral pigments and water-resistant finishes further adapt the space to Taipei’s humid climate, while custom furniture and strategic lighting foster warmth and comfort.

The entrance, marked by large clear glass doors, creates a gentle transition from the busy street to the serene interior. On the second floor, seating and a night bar are set against a black-and-white backdrop, with linear artificial lighting compensating for the lack of natural light. The gradation of lighting and the careful arrangement of furnishings encourage guests to linger, savoring both the ambiance and the aroma of specialty coffee.

Every detail in "Crafting 1000 Scenes" is designed to enhance interaction—between people, objects, and the surrounding environment. The layering of light and shadow, combined with mirror effects, not only reflects the changing seasons but also suggests that life, much like coffee, is rich and full of subtle nuances. This innovative approach earned the project the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its blend of practicality, artistry, and positive impact on urban living.

By merging cultural, artistic, and sensory elements, Hou Chun Chen and Hao Hong Lin have created more than just a coffee shop—they have established a hidden urban sanctuary that invites visitors to pause, reflect, and experience the richness of everyday moments.
