On Recruit: Redefining Recruitment with Japanese Street Culture

Dynamic danmaku effects and bold visuals transform job seeking online

Shogo Tabuchi’s On Recruit platform infuses the energy of Japanese street culture and interactive danmaku comment streams into recruitment, setting a new standard for employer branding and user engagement.

On Recruit, designed by Shogo Tabuchi, revolutionizes the traditional recruitment website by merging the vibrancy of Japanese street culture with advanced web technologies. Drawing inspiration from the communal and dynamic nature of danmaku—animated comment streams popular in East Asian digital culture—the platform offers job seekers an experience that goes beyond simple job listings. Instead, it creates an immersive environment where design, innovation, and user interaction take center stage.

Distinctive features set On Recruit apart from conventional recruitment sites. The platform incorporates multi-threaded animations, a custom typeface, and interactive storytelling, all seamlessly integrated to guide users through a visually rich journey. The danmaku-inspired effects foster a sense of community and emotional connection, echoing findings from academic research on interactive video platforms. This approach not only captivates users but also elevates employer branding by making the recruitment process engaging and memorable.

Technologically, On Recruit leverages Pixi.js for high-performance animations and employs multi-threading to handle complex visual effects without sacrificing responsiveness. The danmaku comment streaming is realized by converting CMS-stored content into optimized textures, ensuring smooth performance even during peak traffic. This technical foundation allows the platform to support hundreds of simultaneous animations, adapting fluidly to different devices and screen sizes.

User experience is central to the platform’s design. From an animated landing page to street-photography-inspired employee interviews, every element is crafted to reflect authenticity and creativity. Animated illustrations and interactive elements on the culture page immerse users in the company’s mission and values. User feedback has highlighted a stronger sense of connection to the brand, with research showing a 35% increase in interaction rates and longer site visits compared to traditional recruitment platforms.

The development process, which began in Tokyo in August 2023, was marked by iterative design and user testing. Challenges included balancing the chaotic allure of danmaku visuals with the need for clear navigation. Through continuous refinement, the team achieved a harmonious blend of excitement and usability, resulting in a platform that keeps users engaged without overwhelming them.

On Recruit’s innovative approach has already garnered recognition, winning the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for its outstanding expertise and creativity. By combining bold aesthetics, technical excellence, and a deep understanding of user engagement, the platform sets a new benchmark for recruitment websites, inspiring both job seekers and employers to rethink the digital hiring experience.
