Yun Li’s “Active” office chair addresses the widespread issue of sedentary behavior in the workplace, a problem linked to occupational diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular conditions, and diabetes. Inspired by research from the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the chair is designed to reduce sedentary time and encourage healthier work habits through increased activity and flexibility.
The Active chair stands out for its dual-cushion system, offering both high and low seating options. This allows users to alternate between sitting and standing positions, supporting a dynamic workflow. The inclusion of armrests and a footrest further enables users to perform light exercises and stretches, helping to alleviate discomfort associated with long periods of sitting. The chair’s unique bending angle also allows for efficient stacking, making it suitable for modern, space-conscious office environments.
Constructed from hollow iron tubes, fabric, and foam, the chair is both sturdy and easy to assemble, requiring only eight screws. Its dimensions—540 mm wide, 400 mm deep, and 780 mm high—ensure it fits comfortably in most office settings. The design’s multi-colored options inject vibrancy into the workspace, enhancing both aesthetics and morale.
One of the main challenges addressed during development was balancing ergonomic support with user habits. The chair’s elevated seat height encourages an upright posture, which is considered healthier for prolonged work. This thoughtful approach reflects Yun Li’s commitment to merging functionality with user well-being.
Recognized for its ingenuity, the Active chair received the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2025, an accolade honoring designs that blend art, science, and technology to improve quality of life. With a China Patent Application Number 202430611547X, the chair exemplifies how innovative design can transform everyday office routines into opportunities for better health.
The Active chair by Yun Li offers a practical and stylish solution for modern offices, encouraging movement and supporting the prevention of occupational diseases. Its multifunctional features and vibrant design make it a valuable addition to any workspace seeking to prioritize employee health and productivity.
