Kinokomeshi: Vibrant Packaging Redefines Japanese Outdoor Dining

Striking design elevates mushroom kamameshi as a memorable gift and outdoor experience

Kikumi Yoshida’s Kinokomeshi packaging reinvents traditional Japanese mushroom rice sets, blending durability, visual impact, and cultural storytelling to appeal to a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts.

Kinokomeshi’s packaging, designed by Kikumi Yoshida, is a bold response to shifting consumer trends in Japan, where outdoor dining and nature experiences have surged in popularity. The design specifically targets younger audiences, aiming to rejuvenate interest in Ehime Prefecture’s renowned mushrooms. By utilizing a vivid vermilion hue—chosen for its high visibility in natural settings—the packaging ensures that the product stands out on retail shelves and in outdoor environments, enhancing brand recognition and memorability.

Distinctive features set Kinokomeshi apart from conventional food packaging. The box’s robust construction, crafted from thick, high-quality paper, is engineered to withstand the weight of rice, dashi stock, and other kamameshi components during transport. This structural integrity allows for secure stacking and long-distance shipping, ensuring that the product arrives in pristine condition. Gold foil stamping on the logo adds a touch of sophistication, reflecting both the premium quality of the ingredients and the meticulous care invested in the product’s presentation.

The design draws inspiration from the natural landscape of Ehime, with the mountains elegantly depicted as a backdrop. The vibrant color palette, reminiscent of outdoor gear, further reinforces the connection to nature and adventure. This thoughtful approach not only appeals to outdoor enthusiasts but also positions Kinokomeshi as an ideal gift—one that encapsulates the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship and the joy of sharing a meal in the great outdoors.

Research and development for Kinokomeshi were driven by a desire to capture the growing market of consumers seeking healing and refreshment in nature, a trend amplified during the pandemic. The redesign of an existing product, informed by client collaboration and a deep understanding of mushroom cultivation, resulted in a packaging solution that balances practicality with aesthetic appeal. The project’s success is underscored by its recognition at the Creators Club Ehime Award and its Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, celebrating its ingenuity and contribution to quality of life.

Kinokomeshi’s packaging exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a familiar product into a lifestyle statement. By merging durability, visual storytelling, and a strong sense of place, Kikumi Yoshida’s creation not only protects its contents but also invites consumers to savor the flavors of Ehime’s mountains—wherever their adventures may take them.

This innovative approach highlights the evolving role of packaging in Japanese food culture, where form and function unite to create memorable, meaningful experiences for a new generation of consumers.
