King Mo Jewelry Store: A Symphony of Light and Geometry

Masato Kure’s boutique transforms jewelry shopping into an immersive art experience.

Inspired by the concept of “accumulation of gems,” King Mo jewelry store in Nanjing redefines retail with a dazzling interplay of light, geometry, and sensory engagement.

King Mo, designed by Masato Kure, stands as a testament to how architecture can elevate retail into an artful journey. Located on the third floor of the KING MO shopping mall in Nanjing, China, this 1,200-square-meter boutique brings together multiple jewelry brands under a single, unified vision. The store’s design draws from the intricate beauty of necklaces and bracelets—collections of small gems—translating this motif into a spatial experience that celebrates both individuality and harmony.

The boutique’s most striking feature is its ceiling, composed of a series of white steel rods arranged along mathematical curves. These rods, each 80mm in diameter and varying in length, create a three-dimensional geometric pattern that shifts with the viewer’s perspective. This installation mimics the complex reflections and sparkle of gemstones, enveloping visitors in a luminous environment that transforms the act of shopping into an immersive, almost gallery-like experience. As light dances across the rods, the ceiling becomes a living artwork, echoing the allure of the jewelry below.

Technical ingenuity underpins the store’s visual drama. To accommodate lighting and sprinkler systems, each rod was meticulously engineered and individually numbered for precise installation. The rods were inserted through a ceiling panel with pre-arranged holes, ensuring both structural integrity and aesthetic coherence. This approach allowed the design team, including Masashi Ota and Yosuke Tsukamoto, to realize a complex vision without compromising functionality or safety.

The spatial arrangement is not merely decorative; it is designed to evoke the natural flow and rhythm of nature. As the rods spread from the store’s center towards its periphery, they adopt an organic, slack-like form that gently envelops the space. This dynamic geometry enhances the presentation of each jewelry brand, allowing their unique identities to shine while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic. The result is a retail environment that appeals to the senses and emotions, fostering deeper connections between visitors and the pieces on display.

King Mo’s innovative approach has garnered significant acclaim, winning the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025. The project’s success lies in its ability to blend technical precision with artistic inspiration, overcoming challenges such as integrating building systems within the sculptural ceiling. By transforming the jewelry boutique into a destination where design and craftsmanship converge, King Mo sets a new standard for experiential retail in the luxury sector.

Masato Kure’s vision for King Mo demonstrates how thoughtful design can transcend commercial function, offering visitors not just a place to shop, but an environment that inspires wonder, appreciation, and lasting emotional resonance.
