Che Yung Kung’s residential project, The Sequence in Grating, reimagines the role of light within the home, drawing inspiration from the phenomenon of grating diffraction. Referencing Francesco Grimaldi’s insights into the behavior of light, the design explores how light interacts with materials to create ever-changing spatial narratives. This approach positions light not merely as an element of illumination, but as an active storyteller, shaping the atmosphere and function of the living environment.
The residence, spanning 107 square meters in New Taipei City, Taiwan, achieves a harmonious balance between order and artistic expression. The design introduces a sequence of virtual and solid facades, using translucent materials and carefully orchestrated lighting to blur the boundaries between natural and artificial illumination. The interplay of these elements allows the space to record the passage of time, with shifting patterns of light and shadow marking each moment throughout the day.
Innovative features distinguish this home from conventional residential interiors. Irregular wood veneer facades, wooden grille cabinet doors, and aluminum extruded light bars create a dynamic visual rhythm. The use of glass chandeliers and silk curtains further enhances the sequencing of light, while the removal of non-essential rooms maximizes both spatial openness and the impact of natural light. Materials such as stone, metal, and water-dyed wood veneer are selected for their timeless qualities and tactile appeal, reinforcing the design’s commitment to craftsmanship and longevity.
The project’s design philosophy draws from historical and contemporary precedents, including the Pantheon’s oculus and the spiritual use of light by architect Tadao Ando. By channeling light through a variety of grating materials, the home establishes a dialogue between interior and exterior, and between the ephemeral and the permanent. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic experience but also fosters greater interaction and communication among family members, as the expanded living room becomes a central gathering space.
Attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the precise construction of 10mm x 10mm wooden grille strips to the integration of the owner’s art collection. The tone-on-tone color palette, combined with a thoughtfully executed lighting plan, elevates the interior to an artistic realm. The project’s recognition with a Bronze A’ Design Award in 2025 underscores its technical ingenuity and contribution to quality of life, exemplifying best practices in art, science, and design.
The Sequence in Grating stands as a testament to the transformative power of light in residential architecture. By merging material innovation with poetic spatial concepts, Che Yung Kung offers a living environment that not only adapts to the rhythms of daily life but also celebrates the beauty of time’s passage.
