Serena: The Anti-Gravity Humidifier Redefining Home Decor

Optical illusion and technology merge for a unique humidification experience

Serena by Kexin Su transforms the everyday humidifier into a captivating work of art, blending visual illusion with practical function to elevate modern living spaces.

Inspired by the interplay of visual illusion art and the forces of gravity, Serena challenges conventional perceptions of physical phenomena. The design leverages the principle of visual persistence, using LED strobe technology to create the mesmerizing illusion of water droplets flowing upward against gravity. This innovative approach not only surprises and delights but also introduces a new dimension to home appliances, making Serena both a functional humidifier and a conversation piece.

Serena’s standout feature lies in its seamless integration of artistic expression and advanced technology. The humidifier employs a miniature water pump and precise water flow control, synchronized meticulously with LED lighting. This coordination produces the illusion of anti-gravity water movement, enriching the user’s interaction with the device. The transparent shell, crafted through advanced molding techniques, enhances light transmittance, further amplifying the visual spectacle while complementing contemporary interior aesthetics.

Functionality remains at the heart of Serena’s design. The device offers intuitive operation through a touch screen or smart control panel, allowing users to adjust humidification settings as well as the speed and brightness of the liquid illusion. This customization ensures that Serena adapts to various moods and environments, making it suitable for a range of modern home settings. Measuring 478 mm in height and 260 mm in diameter, Serena is designed to stand out as both a decorative and practical element.

The development of Serena involved overcoming significant technical and creative challenges. Achieving perfect synchronization between the water pump and LED lights was essential to maintain the integrity of the illusion while delivering effective humidification. Material selection was equally critical, as the shell required high light transmittance to meet both functional and aesthetic demands. The design team, including Guangpeng Yue, Jiangbo Chen, and others, collaborated at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts to bring this vision to life between May and June 2022.

Serena’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. The design was honored with the Bronze A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2025, recognizing its ingenuity and contribution to improving quality of life through the fusion of art, science, and technology. As a testament to the power of creative thinking, Serena stands as a symbol of how everyday objects can be transformed into extraordinary experiences.

By merging optical illusion with essential home functionality, Serena invites users to reimagine the possibilities of interior design and daily living. This award-winning humidifier exemplifies how thoughtful innovation can elevate the ordinary, making homes not only healthier but also more inspiring.
