Enlighten The Universe: Elemental Harmony in Candle Design

Modular candleholder blends art, innovation, and sensory experience

The design journey of “Enlighten The Universe” began with a profound question: why does lighting a candle evoke tranquility? Farnoush Mohajerani’s answer lies in the interplay of the four classical elements. Melted wax embodies water, rising smoke represents air, the solid wax signifies earth, and the flame itself is fire. This elemental philosophy is reflected in the candleholder’s triangular structure, reflective surfaces, and varying heights, creating a holistic sensory experience that appeals to both the mind and the senses.

What sets this candleholder apart is its modular and expandable nature. Users can connect multiple units—starting from three and extending indefinitely—thanks to an innovative magnetic system. This flexibility allows the design to adapt seamlessly to diverse spaces, from intimate home settings to expansive commercial environments. The sturdy, cost-effective base ensures longevity and easy candle replacement, making it a practical solution for continuous enjoyment without the need for frequent new installations.

Functionality is at the heart of this design. The cone-shaped structure prevents wax from dripping onto surfaces, preserving cleanliness and maintaining aesthetic appeal even after repeated use. The adjustable dimensions, particularly in length and width, enable the product to fit effortlessly into various design contexts and user preferences. Heights range from 20 cm at the base to a minimum of 7.63 cm, adding both visual interest and practical value.

Research played a critical role in shaping the final product. Customer feedback highlighted common issues with traditional candleholders, such as wax mess and loss of form over time. “Enlighten The Universe” addresses these concerns, offering a solution that remains beautiful and functional throughout its lifespan. The modular system not only provides stability but also invites personalization, allowing users to evolve the arrangement as their needs and tastes change.

This innovative design, completed in Isfahan, Iran, between July and September 2024, has already garnered recognition, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in Decorative Items and Homeware Design in 2025. The accolade celebrates its creative ingenuity, technical excellence, and contribution to enhancing quality of life through artful, practical design.
