Meet in Arcadia: A Logo Celebrating Rural Beauty

Minimalist branding bridges tradition and revitalization in Guizhou

Inspired by the Chinese character for "beauty," Xiaoming Meng and Xueke Fang’s brand image design for Meet in Arcadia transforms rural culture into a compelling visual identity, supporting both community pride and tourism in Longtang Village.

The Meet in Arcadia project stands as a model for rural revitalization, using design as a catalyst for economic and social transformation. At its heart is a logo that elegantly merges the strokes of the Chinese character for "beauty" with abstract representations of terraced rice paddies and Miao village houses. This minimalist approach not only highlights the unique charm of Guizhou’s countryside but also encapsulates the project’s core values: the preservation of tradition, the celebration of local culture, and the aspiration for a better rural life.

Launched in 2017 to address the challenges facing Longtang Village—such as limited income, brain drain, and left-behind children—the project leverages rural tourism as a primary industry. The brand identity, developed in Beijing between June and September 2022, emphasizes simplicity and recognizability, making it accessible to both villagers and visitors. The logo’s design serves as a unifying symbol, guiding the tourism experience and fostering emotional engagement through its evocative imagery.

Research for the project combined field observation, interviews, and mixed methods to uncover the needs and aspirations of villagers, project staff, and designers. Insights revealed that a strong, culturally resonant brand could stimulate the intrinsic motivation of residents while attracting tourists seeking authentic experiences. The design process required careful integration of traditional motifs with modern aesthetics, ensuring that the brand stood out among numerous rural tourism initiatives.

One of the project’s notable achievements is its ability to balance multiple objectives: economic development, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. The logo’s abstract terraced fields and village roofs not only symbolize the landscape but also serve as a visual metaphor for unity and hope. By involving villagers in the branding process, the designers fostered a sense of ownership and pride, transforming the logo into more than just a visual mark—it became an emotional anchor for the community.

Meet in Arcadia’s branding has garnered recognition, including a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, underscoring its creative ingenuity and positive impact. The project continues to evolve, offering a blueprint for how thoughtful design can drive rural revitalization and enhance quality of life.

Through the lens of design, Meet in Arcadia demonstrates that beauty can be both a cultural value and a practical tool for change. The project’s success highlights the power of visual identity in uniting communities, attracting visitors, and inspiring hope for the future of rural China.
