Luxblade: Redefining Tangible Light in Modern Living

Smart lamp transforms light into a personal, interactive experience

Luxblade, designed by Menghai Xia, Siyu Zang, and Qijun Nie, introduces a new era of interactive lighting by allowing users to physically engage with light, blending sci-fi inspiration with advanced smart home technology.

Inspired by the concept of “grabbing” light, Luxblade challenges the conventional notion of illumination as an intangible element. This innovative smart lamp transforms light into a physical, portable experience, enabling users to hold, carry, and interact with their light source. By eliminating the traditional screw-in mechanism, Luxblade reimagines the relationship between people and their environment, making lighting a more personal and versatile aspect of daily life.

Luxblade’s unique cylindrical lightbulb houses advanced internal components, including control chips, a rechargeable battery, and LED panels. The design features both floor and desktop versions, each equipped with three distinct light sources: the main blade, foundation domes, and light rings. Touchpads on the blade allow users to adjust light direction with circular gestures and control brightness with vertical swipes, offering a seamless and intuitive user experience.

The realization of Luxblade involved in-house design and prototyping using CAD and 3D printing. The main light source, known as “The Blade,” is encased in durable white acrylic, while anodized aluminum forms the base and domes for stability. Advanced LED technology and capacitive touch sensors are integrated within the structure, and a magnetic charging base ensures effortless docking. The system is fully compatible with Apple HomeKit, enabling smart home integration and remote control.

Research for Luxblade drew inspiration from science fiction, aiming to evoke a sense of wonder while maintaining everyday practicality. User feedback played a crucial role in refining both aesthetics and usability, resulting in a product that balances futuristic design with emotional and functional appeal. The lamp’s detachable blade enhances portability, while a guiding light on the dock and continuous base illumination ensure uninterrupted lighting, whether operated manually or via smart systems.

Luxblade’s development presented several challenges, including the integration of touch controls and battery technology within a sleek, user-friendly form. Achieving compatibility with smart home platforms like Apple HomeKit required careful attention to safety and regulatory standards. Through iterative design and rigorous testing, the team succeeded in creating a lighting solution that is both technically advanced and emotionally engaging.

Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, Luxblade stands out for its innovative approach to lighting, merging tangible interaction with smart technology. This award-winning design not only meets professional and industrial standards but also enriches modern living by making light a truly personal and interactive element of home decor.

For those seeking a blend of art, technology, and daily convenience, Luxblade offers a glimpse into the future of lighting—where illumination is not just seen, but held and experienced.
