Laundry hampers are often overlooked yet essential household items, frequently replaced due to mold and mildew damage, especially in humid spaces like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Yu Ren’s Percy Laundry Hamper challenges this norm by employing advanced materials and thoughtful design, ensuring longevity and elegance in everyday living. The project, initiated in Zhengzhou in March 2024 and completed by September 2024, reflects a commitment to solving persistent problems with fresh perspectives.

Unlike traditional fabric baskets, Percy utilizes a combination of imitation rattan, teslin, and cotton rope—materials typically reserved for outdoor products due to their waterproof and moisture-resistant properties. This innovative choice not only prevents the growth of mold and mildew but also ensures the hamper remains attractive and functional over time. The use of teslin, in particular, marks a pioneering approach in clothing storage, offering a durable, non-toxic, and easy-to-clean solution that adapts seamlessly to various home environments.

The design’s practicality is further enhanced by its sturdy, corrosion-resistant metal frame and particleboard tabletop, providing both stability and additional storage space. The laundry basket can be pulled out smoothly without disturbing the frame or top, making it user-friendly and discreet. For added convenience, 360-degree swivel casters with lockable wheels allow effortless movement and secure placement, even when the hamper is full.

Research for Percy revealed a market gap in laundry storage products that balance functionality, durability, and style. Most available options prioritize one aspect at the expense of others, leading to frequent replacements and dissatisfaction. Percy addresses these shortcomings by offering a cohesive series of storage solutions, including a compact organizer, that cater to diverse household needs while maintaining a consistent, minimalist aesthetic.

The design process was not without challenges. Overcoming the issues of mildew and rot in humid environments required extensive material testing and creative problem-solving. The team, including Yating Pang, Xiabing Li, Youjin Song, Yanru Chen, and Xu Wang, focused on user-centric features such as easy cleaning, adaptability, and enhanced mobility, ensuring the final product meets the evolving demands of modern living.

Percy’s excellence has been recognized with the Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2025, honoring its integration of industry best practices, technical competence, and positive impact on daily life. This accolade underscores the hamper’s status as a well-designed, practical, and innovative solution that elevates the standard for household storage.
