Located in a rare flat expanse of northern Omura City, Global Crest Kita Omura stands as a testament to innovative dealership architecture. Traditionally, sub-dealers in Japan have prioritized car display over architectural presence, often relegating shop buildings to the background. Matsuyama’s approach challenges this norm by creating a structure that acts as both a functional showroom and a bold visual signpost, enhancing visibility and redefining the customer experience.
The building’s most distinctive feature is its expansive cantilevered roof, supported by a grid of slender 75mm steel columns. This design not only creates a dramatic silhouette but also fosters a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape. The glass facade blurs the boundaries between inside and out, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of Omura Bay to the west and the Tatara Mountains to the east, even while indoors.
Energy efficiency and transparency are central to the design. Three sides of the structure are fully glazed, maximizing natural light and creating an open, inviting atmosphere. The minimal steel columns, combined with the substantial roof, generate a delicate tension that emphasizes both strength and elegance. This interplay of heavy and light elements results in a space that feels both protective and airy, enhancing the sense of openness for visitors and staff alike.
Functionality is seamlessly integrated into the architectural concept. The 4-meter cantilevered eaves provide sheltered spaces for vehicle deliveries and viewings, ensuring comfort regardless of weather conditions. The layout encourages interaction, with areas dedicated to car viewing, test drives, and customer consultations, all set against the backdrop of the region’s natural beauty. This thoughtful arrangement supports the dealership’s mission to offer detailed information and personalized service to potential buyers.
The project reflects a deep understanding of place and purpose. Matsuyama’s design philosophy emphasizes interpreting the unique potential of each site, resulting in architecture that is both contextually sensitive and forward-thinking. By transforming fixed perceptions of what a car dealership can be, Global Crest Kita Omura introduces a new model for integrating commercial function with aesthetic and environmental awareness.
Recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Global Crest Kita Omura exemplifies how architectural innovation can elevate everyday experiences. The project not only enhances the local landscape but also sets a benchmark for future dealership designs, inspiring a reimagining of commercial architecture worldwide.
