Kunming Wangfujing: Tradition Meets Modern Retail Design

Bai Tie-Dye Craft Inspires a Culturally Rich Shopping Experience

Yeenian Yao’s renovation of Kunming Wangfujing Department Store reimagines the shopping mall as a vibrant fusion of heritage and contemporary design, drawing inspiration from the Bai nationality’s tie-dye artistry.

Kunming Wangfujing Department Store has undergone a remarkable transformation, led by Yeenian Yao and the YEENIAN DESIGN team. The 1900-square-metre renovation project draws deeply from the Bai people’s traditional tie-dye craftsmanship, a revered intangible cultural heritage of Yunnan, China. This approach not only revitalizes the commercial space but also infuses it with cultural depth, offering visitors a unique blend of history and modernity.

The design stands out for its seamless integration of traditional art with modern retail needs. Blue-and-white tie-dye patterns flow throughout the space, creating a visual dialogue between the past and present. Rather than serving as mere decoration, these motifs embody the essence of Bai culture, preserving its purity while injecting a fresh, fashionable vitality into the mall environment. According to YEENIAN DESIGN, this approach ensures that every visit becomes an immersive cultural experience.

Realization of the project hinged on meticulous craftsmanship and sustainable practices. The team employed natural cotton and linen fabrics, hand-tied and dyed with plant-based pigments, to create bespoke spatial decorations. Each piece of fabric is unique, thanks to the inherent randomness of the tie-dye process. This commitment to eco-friendly materials and artisanal techniques aligns with contemporary values of comfort and environmental responsibility.

Customer experience was central to the redesign. The spatial layout was optimized for intuitive navigation, with thoughtfully positioned stores and rest areas. Greenery, comfortable seating, and subtle details contribute to a warm, relaxing atmosphere, making shopping feel as effortless as a stroll with a friend. The design team’s deep understanding of consumer preferences is evident in the harmonious blend of practicality and aesthetics.

The project’s success is underscored by its recognition at the 2025 A' Design Award, where it received the Iron Award for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This accolade highlights the project’s innovative integration of cultural heritage and modern commercial functionality. The renovation not only enhances the shopping environment but also sets a new benchmark for culturally inspired retail spaces in China and beyond.

Kunming Wangfujing’s renovation demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge tradition and innovation, creating spaces that are both meaningful and contemporary. As retail environments continue to evolve, this project serves as an inspiring example of how cultural heritage can be preserved and celebrated within modern lifestyles.
