Located in southern Turkey’s Çukurova Airport, the Cotton Boll lounge by Ece Gulagac and Ozkan Gulagac stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and vibrant culture. The design draws inspiration from Çukurova’s renowned cotton fields, traditional textiles, and historical architecture, weaving these elements into a sophisticated, passenger-centric environment. This approach not only enhances comfort and relaxation but also celebrates the unique spirit of one of the world’s oldest human settlements.
A defining feature of the lounge is its curvilinear ceiling, which echoes the linear patterns of local cotton fields and embodies the “Flow” concept from the airline’s corporate identity. Natural cotton fabrics, chosen for their authenticity and sustainability, are layered with flexible LED lighting to create a soft, diffused illumination. This design ensures visual comfort while subtly referencing the region’s agricultural heritage. To amplify the sense of space, mirror-finish laminate panels reflect the vertical fabric elements, doubling their perceived height and adding an airy expansiveness.
Throughout the lounge, patterns inspired by the form and texture of cotton bolls are integrated into illuminated panels behind built-in seating niches. These artistic details, combined with gentle lighting, foster a welcoming and tranquil atmosphere. In the food and beverage area, a striking mosaic panel—measuring 7.60 by 1.60 meters—merges motifs from local carpet weaving with historical mosaic textures. Comprising 3,532 individually handcrafted mosaic pieces set in hollow aluminum, the panel’s interplay of glossy and matte surfaces creates dynamic reflections that shift with passenger movement, offering a constantly evolving visual experience.
Spanning 765 square meters, including a 420-square-meter lounge, a semi-open terrace, and a dedicated crew resting area, the space is meticulously arranged to facilitate intuitive movement and relaxation. The design prioritizes sustainability by utilizing natural, locally sourced materials that meet stringent fire resistance and durability standards—essential for high-traffic airport environments. This commitment to sustainability is seamlessly integrated with the lounge’s aesthetic, ensuring both safety and long-term performance.
The Cotton Boll lounge’s success lies in its ability to harmonize tradition with innovation. Extensive research into Çukurova’s cultural and natural assets informed every aspect of the project, from material selection to spatial flow. Overcoming challenges such as regulatory constraints and the adaptation of artisanal techniques for large-scale use, the design team achieved a space that is both functional and deeply evocative of its locale. As a result, the lounge offers travelers not just comfort, but a meaningful connection to the region’s heritage.
Awarded the prestigious Golden A’ Design Award in 2025, the Cotton Boll lounge by OGE Architects exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform airport transit into a refined cultural journey. By merging local tradition with modern luxury, the lounge sets a new standard for immersive, sustainable travel experiences.
