CitiFix: Empowering Citizens for Smarter Urban Living

Award-winning app bridges communities and city maintenance teams

CitiFix, designed by Peijin Du, transforms urban maintenance by enabling residents to report and track infrastructure issues in real time, fostering safer and more connected cities.

Urban environments often face persistent challenges such as potholes, broken streetlights, and damaged water pipes, which can go unnoticed or unresolved due to inefficient reporting systems. CitiFix addresses these everyday frustrations by providing an intuitive platform that empowers residents to become active participants in city upkeep. The app’s user-friendly interface allows citizens to document problems with geotagged photos, ensuring accurate and actionable reports for city maintenance teams.

CitiFix stands out for its integration of advanced technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI). The GIS component visualizes reported issues on an interactive map, while AR overlays icons onto real-world environments, making it easier for users to identify and report problems. AI-powered processing automatically categorizes and prioritizes submissions, streamlining the workflow for city officials and maintenance crews.

The app is accessible on both iOS and Android devices, enabling users to capture images, pinpoint locations, and submit detailed reports seamlessly. For city maintenance teams, a dedicated web-based dashboard provides real-time insights, allowing for efficient review, prioritization, and management of reported issues. Integrated analytics help identify recurring problems and optimize resource allocation, supporting smarter and more responsive urban management.

Research for CitiFix involved extensive user-centered design, including surveys and usability testing with residents, city officials, and maintenance staff. Feedback revealed that traditional reporting systems were often too complex, resulting in underreporting and delayed responses. By focusing on simplicity and real-time tracking, CitiFix enhances engagement and improves the efficiency of city maintenance operations.

Launched in Chicago in December 2023 and showcased at The Blanc Gallery NYC and Penn Museum in 2024, CitiFix has already garnered industry recognition, winning the Iron A' Design Award for Information Technologies and Software Design in 2025. The project’s success highlights the potential of technology-driven solutions to create more resilient, responsive, and connected urban communities.

CitiFix exemplifies how thoughtful design and innovative technology can bridge the gap between citizens and city services, making urban living safer and more enjoyable for all. As cities continue to grow and evolve, platforms like CitiFix will play a vital role in shaping the future of smart, sustainable communities.
