AP House: A Modern Chalet Blending Swiss and Macanese Heritage

Johnny Li’s Social Club House Redefines Luxury and Timeless Design

AP House in Macao, designed by Johnny Li, reimagines the social club as a serene retreat, merging Swiss Alpine inspiration with Macanese heritage to create a unique, understated luxury experience.

Tracing the passage of time served as the guiding concept for AP House, a social club in Macao envisioned by Johnny Li. Drawing from the mechanical precision of horology and the tranquil beauty of both Swiss Alpines and oriental gardens, the design offers a sophisticated journey through past, present, and future. This interplay of opposites—Le Brassus’ watchmaking legacy and Macao’s colonial seascape—creates a harmonious synergy, reflected in every architectural detail.

Selected through a competitive process, the design studio was tasked with crafting a “modern chalet” that balances grandeur with intimacy. The result is a vast, high-ceilinged space that feels inviting and serene, avoiding ostentation and clichés. The interior architecture showcases an understated elegance, ensuring the club remains timeless and welcoming to its discerning clientele.

Innovative technology and craftsmanship are at the heart of AP House. Architectural elements and HVAC details were realized using 3D printing, surprising many visitors with their precision. Custom features, such as split-faced bamboo cast in bronze for door handles and table legs, and a solid Wenge dining table crafted in Italy, highlight the commitment to bespoke quality. All environmental controls, including lighting and audio-visual systems, are seamlessly managed via a single iPad, enhancing both comfort and functionality.

AP House is designed as an exclusive haven for Audemars Piguet’s most sophisticated guests. Access is by invitation, with amenities including a bar, dining area, watchmaking masterclasses, and a DJ/music station. Michelin-starred chefs frequently curate bespoke culinary experiences, ensuring each visit is memorable and tailored to the guest’s preferences.

Extensive research underpinned the project, with the design team exploring the history of Audemars Piguet, the town of Le Brassus, and Macao’s lost heritage from the 1920s to 1950s. Visits to AP Houses worldwide and the in-house museum in Le Brassus informed the nuanced approach, while overcoming local regulatory challenges in Macao demanded both creativity and adaptability.

AP House stands as a testament to Johnny Li’s vision of sophistication and restraint. Awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies how thoughtful design, innovation, and respect for heritage can elevate the social club experience, making a lasting contribution to contemporary lifestyle and luxury.
