Ocean-Inspired Office Redefines Workspace Tranquility

Sun Yi Office by Hsuan Wei Chen and Lu Yixin blends maritime history with modern efficiency.

Drawing from the maritime roots of its location, Sun Yi Office transforms the concept of an insurance reception center into a serene, ocean-inspired workspace that balances light, privacy, and collaboration.

Located on the first floor of a five-story independent house, Sun Yi Office by Hsuan Wei Chen and Lu Yixin stands as a testament to the enduring influence of maritime history on contemporary design. The project, completed in March 2024, reimagines the traditional office environment by infusing it with the grandeur and tranquility of the ocean, a nod to the origins of insurance and the site's coastal heritage.

The design’s uniqueness lies in its thoughtful integration of oceanic motifs and practical solutions for common office challenges. Gentle curves and fluid shapes, inspired by the rhythmic ebb and flow of tides, dominate the space. Wave-like features in the ceiling and floor, along with a palette of sand and driftwood neutrals, evoke a sense of calm and continuity. Modular curved desks, reminiscent of rolling waves, encourage an organic workflow and foster a collaborative atmosphere.

Material innovation is central to the realization of this vision. The use of glass bricks at the entrance filters natural light, increasing brightness while maintaining privacy through low transparency. This dual-layered approach, combined with stainless steel doors, addresses the challenge of insufficient lighting without sacrificing the openness of the space. Large-sized tiles, wood veneer, titanium-coated metal, and striped glass further enhance the immersive, maritime-inspired ambiance.

The transition from individual workstations to a shared long table workspace posed a significant design challenge. Careful planning ensured that the new layout not only supports collaboration but also aligns with the aesthetic and functional needs of the office. Movement paths were meticulously designed to prevent crowding, while clusters of organic shapes and vibrant colors, inspired by coral reefs, reinforce the connection to underwater ecosystems.

Sun Yi Office’s commitment to balancing function and tranquility is evident in every detail. Indirect lighting and wave-shaped panels on the principal wall create a deep, immersive atmosphere, reminiscent of sailing amidst rolling waves. The interplay of light and materials fosters a spectacular environment that encourages focus, creativity, and collaboration.

Awarded Bronze in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, Sun Yi Office exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate workplace well-being. By harmonizing historical inspiration with modern needs, this project sets a new standard for innovative, experience-driven office environments.
